About
By providing a person-centered, strengths-based, holistic therapeutic experience, I hope to help you make positive, long-lasting changes for a happy and fulfilling life.
Valerie Fowlkes, LPC is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over five years of experience helping adolescents, adults, and couples create meaningful, lasting change. She has served clients in outpatient mental health settings, therapeutic treatment programs, substance use recovery services, and community-based agencies, giving her a well-rounded understanding of diverse client needs.
Valerie specializes in supporting individuals who are navigating relationship challenges, childhood trauma, depression, anxiety, anger, women’s issues, parenting stress, and behavioral concerns. She also provides premarital, marital, and couples counseling, helping partners strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and reconnect with one another.
Valerie earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University. She uses evidence-based approaches tailored to each client’s goals, including Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness-Based techniques, and the Gottman Method for couples.
Valerie believes therapy should be collaborative, goal-oriented, and empowering. She creates a secure, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel heard, understood, and challenged to grow. Her focus is not just symptom relief, but equipping clients with lifelong skills for healing and success.

My go-to approach for helping couples is to provide a comfortable, supportive environment upon which a strong clinical relationship can be built. It is my belief that, through this partnership, clients are best able to draw on their individual strengths and capabilities.
A variety of tools, techniques, and resources are shared during couples therapy. An example of a tool I would share with them is healthy communication patterns.
I know my couples are making meaningful progress in therapy when they share how they have been making improvements in problem-areas they addressed during their intake.
Clients can supplement their time in couples and marriage therapy by completing therapeutic homework and holding each other accountable for the things they agreed to work on in sessions.
I recommend contacting your insurance company to make sure you understand your mental health benefits before our intake. During your intake, we will be going over a variety of questions so I can get a snapshot picture of your biological, psychological, and social factors, and then briefly go over what brings you in for therapy. This is also a good time to share with me your mental health goals. This information will help me identify if I am a good fit for you and if I am not, I can refer you to someone who can meet your mental health needs.
Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:
Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

For many of us, it can seem like the only option is to leave when we feel unloved. However, there is another option via couples counseling at Thriveworks Chesterfield.
