What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

I use a cognitive behavioral approach for helping people with PTSD and trauma issues in order to help clients reprocess difficult events and emotions and learn new coping skills to help them deal with these tough issues.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach the following in PTSD/trauma therapy:

  • Identifying and expressing feelings
  • Learning and utilizing new coping skills (exercise, deep breathing, guided imagery, etc.)
  • A ladder approach to dealing with anxiety
  • Reprocessing trauma in a safe and comfortable setting
  • Expanding and utilizing a support system
  • Working to improve self-esteem with positive affirmations and specific tools
  • Working to heal and love your inner child using specific exercises
  • Working on spirituality, new goals, and what brings meaning to a client's life

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

When clients are able to find moments of joy and laughter and have the ability to deal with anxiety in a more productive way, I know they are making meaningful progress.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

I recommend exercise and finding moments of fun and humor through friends, shows, books, etc. We often forget to continue to do the things that bring us joy and help us to enjoy the present when we are struggling with difficult issues.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

It is important to find someone who has experience and feels comfortable to work with, as trauma therapy is most effective when you have built a relationship with someone who feels safe.

Symptoms of PTSD

The symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can vary but often include:

  • Flashbacks and distressing memories of the traumatic event
  • Nightmares and sleep disturbances
  • Intense anxiety and irritability
  • Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
  • Negative changes in mood and thought patterns
  • Increased arousal, like difficulty concentrating or exaggerated startle response

How do you overcome PTSD triggers?

The best way to overcome PTSD triggers is to seek the assistance of a professional therapist, such as those at Thriveworks, who can help you to understand and treat your PTSD triggers.

What type of therapist is best for PTSD?

In most cases, a therapist who specializes in Trauma/PTSD therapy is the best type of mental health professional to address the symptoms of PTSD.

Is PTSD/trauma therapy conducted in person or online?

PTSD/trauma therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long should you go to therapy for PTSD?

If a client is working through a single traumatic event that occurred as an adult, trauma or PTSD therapy may only take a few months, but in general, it can take a year or more to effectively treat trauma symptoms and PTSD. The duration of treatment is highly dependent on the client and the severity of their symptoms.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
