Emma: My go-to approach for helping people in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is using techniques like thought records and cognitive restructuring. I find the best benefit in these techniques because they provide methods to identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns that contribute to anxiety or other issues.
Jenni : My go-to approach for helping people in cognitive behavioral therapy is providing psychoeducation on the connection between behavior, thoughts, and emotions. I find that explaining this connection is beneficial, as clients tend to grasp (and appreciate) this connection and seek to intervene in one or more of these domains for improved functioning.
Emma: I teach the following tools in anxiety therapy:
Jenni : "I teach the following tools in cognitive behavioral therapy:
Emma: I know a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy when they demonstrate a deeper understanding of their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and underlying patterns or motivations. They become more introspective and insightful about their experiences and how they relate to their goals and values.
Jenni : I know a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy when their self-talk becomes more accurate and more positive.
Emma: Clients can supplement their time in cognitive behavioral therapy with journaling, support groups, relaxation techniques, creative activities, and moving their bodies.
Jenni : Clients can supplement their time in cognitive behavioral therapy with mindfulness and grounding techniques, including positive affirmations.
Emma: To prepare for your first cognitive behavioral therapy session, you can reflect on what you hope to gain from therapy, think about what specific goals or challenges you want to address, and approach the session with an open mind and a willingness to be honest and authentic.
Jenni : To prepare for their first cognitive behavioral therapy session, an individual can begin to identify their thoughts in various situations and consider how these thoughts are not serving them well. Bring this information to therapy, and we will begin to consider emotions and behaviors as we work to establish new thinking patterns.
At Thriveworks, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized and evidence-based form of psychotherapy or talk therapy. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors that can contribute to various mental health issues or challenges that people are struggling with.
Cognitive behavioral therapists specialize in Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and can help you to identify and comprehend your thought patterns, which often encompass automatic negative thoughts, cognitive distortions, and self-defeating beliefs. Once these negative thought patterns are pinpointed, cognitive behavioral therapists aim to challenge and replace them with the objective of fostering more constructive and logical thinking. In addition, these therapists place significant emphasis on implementing positive behavioral changes based on the newly established, healthier thought patterns.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for addressing conditions like anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. It focuses on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviors, making it well-suited for issues related to distorted thinking and emotional regulation.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
The success rate of CBT varies depending on the intentions of the client and their condition(s).
The selection between cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is based on an individual’s unique needs and challenges. CBT is commonly chosen for addressing conditions such as anxiety and depression, whereas DBT is especially beneficial for individuals dealing with borderline personality disorder, emotional regulation issues, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.

The counselors and psychologists at Thriveworks Newport News provides cognitive behavioral therapy for a variety of challenges that clients face. Our therapists and counselors have seen meaningful change take place within their client’s lives through first changing their own negative thought patterns.
Thoughts affect feelings; feelings affect thoughts. They both influence actions. Emotions, thoughts, and actions are separate but intertwined. This is why untrue thoughts can cause so much harm: they escalate to actions. The first step to undercut these cognitive distortions is to identify them. There are infinite ways that people can distort reality, but a few are more common than others. Typical cognitive distortions include:
These distorted patterns of thinking are not fixed. People can change these outlooks and replace them with truthful, positive thoughts. Counselors who utilize CBT have many ways of helping clients change their thinking. One example is the three-column technique wherein they draw two lines on a blank piece of paper, making three columns.
Cognitive behavior therapy can be used as treatment for a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to:
