What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in DBT is identifying their goals and working at their pace. I find the best benefit in routine practice so that there is more sustainable progress.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

I teach the following tools in DBT:

  • Identifying, understanding, and accepting emotions.
  • Challenging negative thoughts and creating alternate thoughts.
  • Introducing more intentionality into one’s life (e.g. scheduling, planning, communication, reflection).
  • Mindfulness practices – creating more awareness and intentionality.
  • Self-compassion/acceptance – ways to compliment oneself and appreciate the differences that we all have.
  • Identifying opportunities to engage in more self-compassion/self-care practices.
  • Identifying current coping strategies; finding new coping strategies.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in DBT when they are able to utilize tools that they have learned in therapy in their day-to-day life and feel an associated relief since the onset of treatment.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in DBT with journaling, meditation, exercise, socialization, reading, and other mindfulness practices.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

To prepare for your first DBT session, I encourage you to identify the items you want to focus on and have an answer to the statement: “I will know therapy has benefitted me when _____.” (What’s your goal of coming to therapy?).

Starting Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in The Woodlands

What is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)?

At Thriveworks, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) primarily concentrates on assisting individuals in emotion regulation, enhancing interpersonal relationships, and acquiring effective coping strategies for managing stress and emotional difficulties.

How does DBT work?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets your personal challenges. You may work with your DBT therapist to maintain diary cards to monitor progress, emphasizing validation and support in the therapeutic relationship. DBT follows a stage-based approach, prioritizing crisis reduction initially and life satisfaction.

What is DBT best used for?

DBT was initially developed to address the needs of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, its versatile approach has enabled its application to a wide range of mental health conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety, depression, stress, and anger issues.

What are the 4 pillars of DBT?

The 4 pillars of DBT are mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

Is DBT better than EMDR?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have distinct purposes and aren’t inherently superior or inferior to one another. DBT is most effective for managing emotional regulation, personality disorders, and interpersonal challenges, while EMDR is specifically tailored for individuals with trauma-related conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Is DBT conducted in person or online?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) with therapists at Thriveworks in The Woodlands, TX is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many months is DBT?

The duration of a standard DBT program is typically around 24 weeks, which is roughly six months. The actual number of sessions will vary depending on the issues you wish to address.

After 7 months of individual and couples counseling, it just seemed like I was destined to have to accept the status quo, and not feel like real progress would be made.. As a senior citizen that's been around the block a few times, I was dubious about how counseling would help in our communication concerns. Approximately 2 weeks ago, to the extreme credit of my counselor, Dr Kennedy, he hit the mark on helping me get through my barriers and I was almost immediately gratified at the outcome. Patience is too much of a "cliche". It took many hours of listening, agreement and disagreement, and trial and error homework sessions to come up with a solution that in my view was right on target. The real purpose of this review is two fold... First, I absolutely credit Dr Kennedy with a never give up attitude and continually trying different things to reach a positive outcome. He was always a good listener and I felt he had a personal interest in helping me achieve success. He always emphasized to first "learn the process", and then "put it into practice". Second, I believe it is wise to think of counseling opportunities as a journey that may not reach its goals in an a few visits. Rather, continue to work hard over tiime at suggections for improvement, don't give up, and hopefully the hard work will lead to success.

My therapist, Catherine has really helped me over the last few months, so much that my friends and family have noticed. After each session, I find a new way/skill to use when communicating with the narcissists in my life. I still have a ways to go, letting go of guilt, not reacting, but I am confident I will get there.
