What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is identifying their goal and working at their pace. I work to empower the client to make changes in their life at a pace that yields sustainable progress. I prefer, enjoy, and find the best benefit in exploring the client’s experiences with depression and collaborate with the client to identify any patterns and opportunities for change in their life.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in individual therapy for depression:

  • Identifying, understanding, and accepting emotions.
  • Identifying patterns of depression with thoughts, behaviors, and emotions
  • Challenging negative thoughts and creating alternate thoughts
  • Creating more intentionality into one’s life (e.g. scheduling, planning, communication, reflection)
  • Mindfulness practices – creating more awareness and intentionality
  • Self-compassion/acceptance – ways to compliment oneself and appreciate the differences that we all have.
  • Identifying opportunities to engage in more self-compassion/self-care practices
  • Identifying current coping strategies; finding new coping strategies

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they are able to utilize tools that they have learned in therapy in their day-to-day life and feel an associated relief since the onset of treatment. Additional evidence of progress is seen when a client is able to consistently report reduced depressive symptoms between sessions.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy with a journaling, meditation, exercise, socialization, reading, and other mindfulness practices.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first individual therapy session for depression, you are encouraged to know you are already taking the first steps toward making change in your life. Know that your clinician wants to support you and assist you in making changes that will reduce your depression so that you are able to feel more confident, empowered, and grounded in your day-to-day life. Thank you for taking these steps for yourself and for reaching out for help!

Starting Depression counseling

What can counseling do for those who suffer with depression?

Depression counseling can help those with major depression, minor depression, postpartum depression, persistent depressive disorder, and more. The providers at Thriveworks in The Woodlands, TX will develop a unique treatment plan based on your specific experience, needs, and goals.

Is it worth going to therapy for depression?

It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.

How does depression counseling work?

Depression counseling works by helping people pinpoint life problems, distorted thought patterns, and other causes of their depression, then process and work through them in order to mitigate the negative effects those factors have on their lives.

Signs of depression

Common signs of depression include:

  • Consistent low mood
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Oversleeping or difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in diet (eating much more or less)
  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in previous hobbies or activities
  • Excessive substance use

Is depression counseling conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks depression counseling in The Woodlands, TX is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How often should you attend depression therapy sessions?

Depression counseling can last for a few weeks, months, or longer, dependent on the severity of one’s depression as well as their needs and preferences.

How much does depression counseling cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay a $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Why Is Depression Therapy Effective? How Does It Work?

As we mentioned above, a depression therapist can help you dig into potential causes (which we’ll discuss more later), manage your specific symptoms, and help you get to a happier, healthier state of mind.

Here’s how you can expect your experience at Thriveworks in The Woodlands, TX to go:

  • You will discuss how you’ve been feeling with your counselor
  • They will ask questions to best understand what you’re going through
  • Your counselor will then design your course for treatment
  • You’ll meet with your counselor on a regular basis; in each session, they will use therapeutic techniques to help you
  • They might even work a self-care plan into treatment

Your counselor might also talk to you about the possibility of taking antidepressants or another medication that helps people manage their depression.

Why Do I Feel Like This? Causes of Depression

Unfortunately, there is no one cause of depression. This can make understanding why one feels depressed difficult if there is no obvious trigger.

If your immediate family members (like your parents and/or siblings) have suffered with depression before, you’re at a greater risk of experiencing it yourself. Fortunately, in these instances, you may know that you’re at greater risk and can therefore do your due diligence in maintaining a happy, healthy mind.

Our environment has a huge effect on our health and happiness, as well. For example, if you and your spouse are in an unhappy relationship and you live together, this will take a toll on your mental health.

Similarly, if you experience a traumatic event or the loss of a loved one, your mind enters an unhealthy spot and you are at a greater risk of developing depression. The above might explain why you’re feeling down and depressed—or, it might now.
