Starting Therapy for Black men & women

What is therapy for Black men and women?

Therapy for the treatment of Black men and women is a person-centered, individualized type of psychotherapeutic care that takes into account the emotional and mental impact of being a black person of color in today’s society. Thriveworks The Woodlands therapists use traditional therapy techniques implemented through an anti-racist lens, addressing issues like racism, colorism, toxic masculinity/misogyny, and others. This type of therapy is meant to create a safe space for black individuals to express their emotions and alleviate their stress in an environment that caters to their unique experiences.

How does therapy for Black men and women work?

Therapy for Black men and women is much like standard psychotherapy in that Thriveworks The Woodlands therapists will use a variety of approaches depending on each client’s needs. However, it will also heavily incorporate person-centered therapy, which means that every client’s individual experiences, goals, and needs will be at the forefront of treatment.

Is therapy for Black men and women conducted in person or online?

Therapy for Black men and women at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does therapy for Black men and women last?

Therapy for Black women and men will last as long as necessary to achieve the client’s therapeutic goals, whether that be a few months or years. Generally, though, true progress will often take at least five months. Thriveworks therapists in The Woodlands, TX will continue to provide care for as long as necessary to help clients meet their therapeutic needs.

Gearing Up for Counseling as an African American

Seeking support from a mental health professional can be daunting, especially for African Americans who face unique challenges in a divided political climate and a pandemic that exacerbates existing inequities. Cultural stigmas surrounding counseling often discourage seeking professional help, leading many to rely on informal support systems or avoid addressing mental health needs altogether.

The Challenges African Americans Face:

  • Cultural stigmas and generational avoidance of professional counseling
  • Limited access to culturally competent therapists
  • Societal misunderstandings about African American experiences and mental health

Counseling Methods for African American Counseling

  • Culturally responsive therapy: Tailored to address the unique experiences, values, and cultural backgrounds of African American clients.
  • Narrative therapy: Focuses on personal storytelling and reframing negative narratives to empower clients and promote resilience.
  • Strengths-based therapy: Identifies and builds upon the strengths, resources, and resilience of African American individuals and communities.
  • Trauma-informed therapy: Recognizes the impact of historical and intergenerational trauma on African American mental health and incorporates trauma-sensitive approaches.
  • Mindfulness-based therapy: Integrates mindfulness practices to help African American clients manage stress, regulate emotions, and foster self-awareness.
  • Family systems therapy: Acknowledges the importance of family dynamics and relationships within African American communities, emphasizing familial support and healing.
  • Group therapy: Provides a safe space for African Americans to connect, share experiences, and receive support from peers who understand their cultural context.
  • Holistic approaches: Addresses mental health within the broader context of physical health, spirituality, and community support, aligning with holistic wellness principles often valued in African American culture.

After 7 months of individual and couples counseling, it just seemed like I was destined to have to accept the status quo, and not feel like real progress would be made.. As a senior citizen that's been around the block a few times, I was dubious about how counseling would help in our communication concerns. Approximately 2 weeks ago, to the extreme credit of my counselor, Dr Kennedy, he hit the mark on helping me get through my barriers and I was almost immediately gratified at the outcome. Patience is too much of a "cliche". It took many hours of listening, agreement and disagreement, and trial and error homework sessions to come up with a solution that in my view was right on target. The real purpose of this review is two fold... First, I absolutely credit Dr Kennedy with a never give up attitude and continually trying different things to reach a positive outcome. He was always a good listener and I felt he had a personal interest in helping me achieve success. He always emphasized to first "learn the process", and then "put it into practice". Second, I believe it is wise to think of counseling opportunities as a journey that may not reach its goals in an a few visits. Rather, continue to work hard over tiime at suggections for improvement, don't give up, and hopefully the hard work will lead to success.

My therapist, Catherine has really helped me over the last few months, so much that my friends and family have noticed. After each session, I find a new way/skill to use when communicating with the narcissists in my life. I still have a ways to go, letting go of guilt, not reacting, but I am confident I will get there.
