My approach to grief & loss counseling is to meet clients where they are in their grief process, offering support and normalizing their experiences. I utilize emotion-focused and mindfulness strategies to help clients connect with and identify their emotions, fostering self-efficacy and healthy emotional management.
In grief & loss counseling, I teach:
Clients make meaningful progress when they report a decrease in the frequency and intensity of distressing symptoms and demonstrate an improved ability to identify and process emotions healthily. Visible comfort in utilizing coping skills and engaging in value-congruent activities with minimal prompting also signifies advancement.
To supplement grief & loss counseling, clients are encouraged to participate in nourishing activities, avoid isolation, join grief support groups, and maintain engagement with their social support system. Regular involvement in hobbies and activities aligned with personal values can significantly aid therapy progress.
Preparing for the first grief & loss counseling session involves ensuring adequate sleep and nutrition and allowing time to decompress before and after the session due to the emotional intensity of processing grief. It’s important to remember that it’s okay to pace yourself and share your grief at a comfortable rate, with a therapist who respects your pace.

. You might be familiar with the popularized stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance), but there are two main styles of grieving that better demonstrate the different responses:
Neither of these two responses are right or wrong. Some people are simply more emotional, while others would rather distract themselves from their loss emotions and their loss. And everyone has different needs when it comes to processing and accepting their loss.
The grief counselors at Thriveworks Richmond, VA (Shockoe Bottom) understand that every individual’s experience with grief is different. While some people are overwhelmed with sadness, others feel angry or even relieved, instead. Your grief counselor can help you process and work through whatever range of emotions come your way. They can also help you move forward in your life without the loved one lost. This is often a big obstacle for many people when they lose a close friend or family member.
Here at Thriveworks Richmond, our grief counselors will also consider your religion and your culture in terms of how that might affect your grieving process. They will keep these important factors in mind as they assess your reaction to your loss and the impact it has on you. The ultimate mission is to help you cope with your loss and move forward with a happy, healthy life.
Call (804) 980-7242 today to schedule your grief counseling appointment, or go online to get started. We have flexible appointments available, including extended hours in the evenings and on the weekends, to best ensure that you can find a day and time that works for you! We also accept most major insurance plans. Reach out today—we look forward to it.
