What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping individuals via online therapy is a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI). I prefer to use a combination of approaches, which allows me to meet an individual where they are.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

The tools I teach and model in online therapy include active listening, working with feedback, positive self-talk, mindfulness, being present, and healthy communication.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress when the person tells me they are feeling better and provides me with examples of how they are using the skills and tools we discuss. I also can observe changes in body language, emotions, and energy. The person will also usually report an improvement in their symptoms.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can enhance their experience by completing homework given during sessions by their clinician. This could include skills, worksheets, or activities.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

In preparing for online therapy, you should make sure you have a private space that is free of distractions. It is also very helpful to make sure Zoom is loaded and operational on your device (including your camera).

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Do I Need Online Counseling?

The truth is, everyone could use a little help from time to time. No matter how old you are, where you’re from, or what your concerns are, working with a trusted therapist, counselor, or another mental health professional can prove to be very beneficial to your overall well being. Take these scenarios, for example:

  1. Tynell’s grandmother recently passed away and it hit him pretty hard. His grandmother was a rock in his life and now, without her, he doesn’t know how to move forward. He’s tried putting his energy into his hobbies and work, but he frequently gets upset and depressed. He knows he can’t bring her back, but he can’t help but think about her still living down the street from him. Tynell decides to talk to a grief counselor about what he’s going through.
  2. Cat and Austin are both school teachers. They work long hours and put a lot of hard work and money into their professions. Getting home at a reasonable time (and not being exhausted when they do) is not a normal thing for them. They’ve been talking about wanting to start a family of their own, but it doesn’t seem like a good idea because of everything else going on. The stress and tension are starting to take a toll on their relationship. Cat and Austin decide to work with a marriage counselor and find healthy ways to cope with their work/life balance together.

Fortunately, there are mental health experts who specialize in many different fields and can help us work through our respective challenges. And online counseling makes this help even more accessible and valuable. My counselor was great and I adored him, he gets 5/5. I received my first billing statement on 1-16-24, the email saying I could pay in part or in full. I payed about a 3rd, and planned on doing the same for 2 more pay checks. Today, 1-31-24, I received an email thanking me for my payment. Their billing department withdrew the remaining balance, over $350 from my account without authorization. I only had $60 in that account. I work in private healthcare, and my practice would never collect without a clients knowledge and consent. If they won’t pay, we don’t use their stores info and take their money, we send to collections and let them do their job. I did try calling, auto it said wait time 20 minutes. I sent an email to their department at 1ish, didn’t hear anything back by end of business day.
