About
As a person who has made it to the other side of traumatic life events, I understand the different emotions that come from feeling overwhelmed, angry, and alone.
Ashleigh Mack is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She has experience treating couples, families, and individuals with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, grief, trauma, spiritual abuse, pregnancy, postpartum, life transitions, relationships, and behavioral concerns. Ashleigh earned her Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Capella. As a child of teen pregnancy, events in her life as well as her education have given her an understanding of various backgrounds. She knows what it is to come from nothing and, at times, feel like nothing.
Ashleigh gravitates toward a more systemic approach and utilizes different methods and models that are client-centered, such as intergenerational family therapy, solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Life can be all over the place and messy. Sometimes we just need someone to be our soundboard and help us dissect our stuff. Ashleigh would like to provide that space for you, giving you room to discover the deeper parts of your journey and tools to utilize when discovery becomes overwhelming. If you are ready, schedule an appointment with her today!

My go-to approach for family therapy, influenced by a variety of theories, involves creating a collaborative and safe environment where each family member feels heard and valued. I typically start by assessing each individual's perspective on family dynamics, its impact on behavior, and their own roles within the family system. Utilizing Adlerian techniques, I encourage open communication and exploration of feelings, fostering a sense of belonging and community among family members. Additionally, I incorporate eclectic strategies tailored to the unique needs of the family, such as solution-focused methods or cognitive behavioral techniques, to empower them in identifying strengths and developing practical solutions to their challenges. Overall, my aim is to promote cooperation, mutual respect, and healthier interactions that support the family's growth.
I teach the following tools in family therapy:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy when family members demonstrate improved communication skills and a willingness to engage in open discussions about their feelings and concerns. This often includes active listening, expressing emotions without defensiveness, and showing empathy towards one another. Additionally, when clients begin to identify and challenge negative patterns and beliefs, implement the tools we've discussed in sessions, and report positive changes in their interactions outside of therapy, it indicates they're on a path to healthier relationship dynamics. Progress is also reflected in increased problem-solving abilities, reduced conflict, and a more collaborative approach to addressing family challenges.
Clients can supplement their time in family therapy by journaling about their thoughts and feelings related to family dynamics and interactions. This practice allows individuals to reflect on their experiences, recognize patterns in their behavior, and articulate emotions that may be difficult to express verbally. In addition, reading self-help books or resources focused on communication, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence can provide valuable insights and strategies for enhancing their understanding of interpersonal relationships. Engaging in mindfulness or relaxation exercises can also be beneficial, helping family members manage stress and approach discussions with a clearer, more open mindset. Finally, practicing the skills learned in therapy, such as active listening or using 'I' statements, in real-life situations can reinforce the lessons from sessions and demonstrate the progress made over time.
To prepare for their first family therapy session, an individual can reflect on their goals and concerns about family dynamics to better articulate their feelings and aspirations during discussions. It's helpful to think about specific issues they'd like to address and consider how each family member might contribute to or be affected by these topics. Additionally, identifying patterns and past interactions within the family can provide valuable context for the therapist. Finally, it's important to note that seeking individual therapy alongside family therapy can be beneficial, as it allows individuals to explore personal issues that may impact family dynamics and receive tailored support in their personal growth.
Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.
Thriveworks family therapists in Orlando, FL usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.
The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.
This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.
In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.
Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.
Thriveworks therapists in Orlando, FL offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.
Family. They are by your side as soon as you start your journey in this world. They are the ones who know how to push every one of your buttons, make you laugh, know every bit and piece about you. However, sometimes that can hurt you or make you feel alone. No family is perfect, and all families encounter some shape or form of challenges over the years.
Luckily, family therapy can help you and your family overcome past situations and learn the tools you need to move forward in a healthier, more harmonious light. At Thriveworks Orlando Counseling, a team of dedicated family therapists is readily available to help you achieve those things. If you feel like you and your family could greatly benefit from family counseling, call our office at (754) 400-5514 to get started.
There are so many reasons why a family might consider seeking the help of a professional to work through their unique challenges. Some of the more common reasons why someone may seek out family therapy are:

Once you have made the decision to seek family therapy at Thriveworks Orlando Counseling, you will be set up with a counselor who will help you every step of the way. During your initial sessions with a family counselor, each member of your family will discuss the different concerns and goals they have. It is important to hear what each person has to say in order to get a bigger picture idea of how to resolve and achieve what you set in place. Once your therapist has all of the information they need, they will then create a unique plan of care that is specific to you and your family.
