What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is EMDR. I find the best benefit in EMDR because it helps the client handle the overwhelming emotions resulting from the trauma. It is used to address adverse life experiences that contribute to problems in daily living.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach the following tools in PTSD/trauma therapy:

  • Grounding techniques for panic attacks
  • Progressive muscle relaxation to aid in falling asleep and easing tension during the day
  • Mindfulness practices to help the client stay in the moment instead of feeding anxiety
  • Understanding the window of tolerance; how the client can know when they are in their optimal zone for functioning
  • EMDR practices for self-soothing

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when they begin to feel safe in their environment. Safety is the first subject I will work with a client on because the trauma experience interferes with the client's perception of safety.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy with reading such books as 'The Body Keeps the Score' by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. or 'The PTSD Workbook' by Mary Beth Williams, PhD, LCSW, CTS and Soili Poijula, PhD. They can also practice the techniques taught in our sessions. A great supplement for PTSD/trauma therapy is to simply exercise; yoga, in particular, is very helpful for PTSD/trauma.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for their first PTSD/trauma therapy session, someone can try to be open-minded about what therapy may look like, and know that they can show their emotions, regardless of what they are. If you do not want to talk about your trauma, you do not have to right away. Therapy will proceed at your pace. Clients are often surprised by what 'therapy' looks like; it is up to you!

Starting Trauma/PTSD therapy

What is PTSD/trauma therapy?

At Thriveworks, Trauma/PTSD therapy involves dedicated efforts to address and navigate through past and/or recent traumatic events. Therapists specializing in trauma create a secure environment to process and heal from these experiences, aiming to reduce trauma-related symptoms and enhance overall quality of life.

How does PTSD/trauma therapy work?

Our Thriveworks providers use Trauma/PTSD therapy treatments like eye movement desensitization and reprocessing EMDR, CBT, and exposure therapy with the goal of helping clients process the traumatic events they have experienced so that they can to start feeling safe and secure again.

Symptoms of PTSD

The symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can vary but often include:

  • Flashbacks and distressing memories of the traumatic event
  • Nightmares and sleep disturbances
  • Intense anxiety and irritability
  • Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
  • Negative changes in mood and thought patterns
  • Increased arousal, like difficulty concentrating or exaggerated startle response

How do you overcome PTSD triggers?

The best way to overcome PTSD triggers is to seek the assistance of a professional therapist, such as those at Thriveworks, who can help you to understand and treat your PTSD triggers.

What type of therapist is best for PTSD?

In most cases, a therapist who specializes in Trauma/PTSD therapy is the best type of mental health professional to address the symptoms of PTSD.

Is PTSD/trauma therapy conducted in person or online?

PTSD/trauma therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long should you go to therapy for PTSD?

If a client is working through a single traumatic event that occurred as an adult, trauma or PTSD therapy may only take a few months, but in general, it can take a year or more to effectively treat trauma symptoms and PTSD. The duration of treatment is highly dependent on the client and the severity of their symptoms.

How successful is therapy for PTSD?

The success rate of therapy for PTSD depends entirely on the individual’s symptoms, commitment to attending sessions, and personal abilities.

I am incredibly grateful for the support and guidance my therapist has provided. From the very beginning, she created a safe and welcoming space where I felt heard, understood, and truly cared for. Her approach is both compassionate and insightful, allowing me to work through my thoughts and emotions in a way that feels productive and empowering.. . What I appreciate most is her ability to listen without judgment while offering thoughtful perspectives that have helped me grow both emotionally and mentally. She has a way of making even the most challenging topics feel manageable, and I always leave each session with a sense of clarity and reassurance.. . There is absolutely nothing I would change about my experience. The level of care, professionalism, and dedication my therapist provides is exceptional, and I genuinely feel supported every step of the way. I highly recommend her services to anyone looking for a compassionate and skilled therapist who truly makes a difference.

I've been to other therapists and it didn't feel personable or helpful. I would always have to 'refresh' the therapist on topics we had already covered. I have yet to have to do that with Chris. He seems to always listen and he provides valuable insight, and helpful interaction. A very good experience so far!
