What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is EMDR. I find the best benefit in EMDR because it helps the client handle the overwhelming emotions resulting from the trauma. It is used to address adverse life experiences that contribute to problems in daily living.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach the following tools in PTSD/trauma therapy:

  • Grounding techniques for panic attacks
  • Progressive muscle relaxation to aid in falling asleep and easing tension during the day
  • Mindfulness practices to help the client stay in the moment instead of feeding anxiety
  • Understanding the window of tolerance; how the client can know when they are in their optimal zone for functioning
  • EMDR practices for self-soothing

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when they begin to feel safe in their environment. Safety is the first subject I will work with a client on because the trauma experience interferes with the client's perception of safety.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy with reading such books as 'The Body Keeps the Score' by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D. or 'The PTSD Workbook' by Mary Beth Williams, PhD, LCSW, CTS and Soili Poijula, PhD. They can also practice the techniques taught in our sessions. A great supplement for PTSD/trauma therapy is to simply exercise; yoga, in particular, is very helpful for PTSD/trauma.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for their first PTSD/trauma therapy session, someone can try to be open-minded about what therapy may look like, and know that they can show their emotions, regardless of what they are. If you do not want to talk about your trauma, you do not have to right away. Therapy will proceed at your pace. Clients are often surprised by what 'therapy' looks like; it is up to you!

Jessica has really taken the time and effort to learn about me and my history and needs! As well as my spouse. We see her for couples therapy and individual sessions. She gives straightforward advice and definitions, and encourages me to be gentle with myself and to pace difficult tasks. I've seen many therapists in my life and she's the only one that doesn't judge me or react poorly to sexual topics and she makes me feel super comfortable talking about awkward topics. I absolutely love working with her, it has been a phenomenal experience and has helped me individually and my marriage also. I'm very thankful for her!

I appreciate the fact that my provider, Andrea Brock, tackles my concerns and magnifies them to me respectfully. I feel heard, seen, and acknowledged. The exercises and worksheets she provides applies to my daily life and interest.Nothing she shows me is irrelevant to my mental conditions or situations.
