About Provider

About Holden

Holden Raines is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 11 years of experience working in the mental health field. He has worked with a variety of populations including adults, adolescents, and children/families. He has worked in the community extensively and developed a flexible, person-centered approach. Holden specializes in treating anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, and family conflict.

Holden completed his Master's (M.S) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Radford University. Holden first began working with children, adolescents, and their families in the home environment. He then transitioned to crisis counseling in which he provided solution-focused brief therapy directed at short-term goals. He obtained his license in 2021, and now provides outpatient counseling in a traditional face-to-face setting and also via video. Holden has developed an adaptable style in counseling and meets clients where they are. He often utilizes existential, narrative, strength-based, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused, and person-centered approaches in counseling.

As hard as we may fight it, a stigma still exists regarding mental health and asking for help. Holden understands that it can be a difficult decision to begin therapy. He looks forward to helping you identify goals, work toward them, and live a more fulfilling life.

Get to know Holden

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I always felt like I had a natural ability to support others, listen to them, and help them cope with problems. My parents also modeled a career in the helping professions because they were teachers and counselors.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I think that I work best with young adults who seek counseling for depression and/or anxiety.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I'm most excited to work with adolescents and young adults who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, a personality disorder, etc.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

That healing is not linear and sometimes it takes longer than expected. Setbacks are part of the process.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I believe that Thriveworks seeks to support clients by providing availability, accessibility, etc. Thriveworks also values and prioritizes therapists with various policies, compensation, benefits. The choice was clear for me.

What inspires you?

I love to see people gain insight/knowledge and work toward their identified goals. I like to foster positive change.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

A brief introduction and information regarding the nature of counseling. Significant time spent getting to know one another - building rapport and establishing a plan for treatment.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I'd like to discover their reason for seeking counseling. I would like to gain information about the individual and about the presenting issue; build rapport and work with the client to establish goals and future plans for sessions.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

Clients should know that I work hard to create a safe, non-judgmental environment. I will listen to them and tailor treatment to their goals.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I love to be outside - hiking, fishing, kayaking.

What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I am a musician - I love both creating and listening to music.
