Valerie Posas, PsyD, is a highly dedicated Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who has over 10 years of extensive experience in counseling people from diverse backgrounds, and in various settings. Dr. Posas is a native of Texas, but she spent 13 years in California and in traveling the world to complete various mental health trainings. She worked for the California Department State Hospital, as a Senior Psychologist Specialist, from 2015-2021. While at the State Hospital, Dr. Posas completed various trainings required for the forensic work setting, including extensive trauma-informed care trainings, and she utilized her trainings to train other staff members about the importance of trauma-informed care. Therefore, Dr. Posas has a great passion for trauma work and helping individuals heal their trauma. Her professional background includes education and clinical experiences that have focused on mental health, behavior, and learning.
Dr. Posas completed her Bachelor of Science (BS) in Communication Studies at the University of Texas. She completed both her Master of Arts (MA) in Psychology, with an emphasis in Child and Adolescent Psychology, and her Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Applied Clinical Psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Prior to making the decision to enter the field of psychology, Dr. Posas completed the Post Baccalaureate course requirements in Special Education and Bilingual Education at the University of Texas-Austin. Although she was initially looking forward to a career in the field of education, Dr. Posas's personal and professional experiences, during that time and prior, led to the desire and ultimately the outcome of furthering her education in the field of psychology.
Dr. Posas specializes in trauma work and her primary goal is to help people heal their bodies, minds, and souls. She is aware of the importance of knowing what trauma is, knowing how trauma impacts individuals differently, knowing about the biological responses to trauma, and knowing how trauma can lead to various behaviors. With a greater understanding of trauma, Dr. Posas approaches each individual client with compassion and empathy, and she takes on a more eclectic approach to therapy, which allows her to utilize various theoretical orientations and techniques to address each individual client’s needs.

I know how heavy life can feel, and through my personal experiences with loss and anxiety and my professional work supporting others, I’ve learned that healing, growth, and empowerment are possible.
I love helping all people navigate anxiety and the ups and downs of everyday life—because let's be honest, it can get a little chaotic. I aim to create a space that feels supportive, nonjudgmental, and real, where you can be yourself. Along the way, I'll help you gain insight, build tools, and maybe even share a few laughs as you grow into the version of yourself you're working toward.
My approach is warm, person-centered, and empathetic. I use trauma-focused care, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, and solution-focused techniques to help clients understand themselves and build healthier ways of coping. I especially enjoy supporting individuals navigating anxiety, life transitions, low self-esteem, and trauma.
No matter where you are in your journey, you don't have to navigate life's challenges alone. Healing, growth, and change are possible. Taking the first step toward therapy can feel overwhelming, but it can also be the beginning of meaningful transformation. When you're ready, I would be honored to support you as you move toward healing and personal growth.

Divorce counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The amount of divorce counseling sessions will vary from one person to the next, depending on their specific needs. However, it typically lasts for several weeks or months.
Divorce closes a path forward for one relationship. There are many losses to grieve and new realities to navigate. Just practically, decisions need to be made about living situations, custody of children, finances, and legal proceedings. Emotionally, people face loneliness, anger, confusion, guilt, anxiety, fear, and more.
It may feel like divorce is the end, but there are many roads forward, toward happiness and wholeness. New beginnings can come from closed paths. Forging a new path is not easy. Struggling is normal. Falling down is okay. Asking for help is a necessity. But many people are glad they chose the hard road of divorce recovery.
No one has to forge a new path alone. Certainly, friends and family can offer support, but often people need the guidance of a therapist. That is why Thriveworks Bastrop offers divorce recovery counseling: we love seeing clients process their pain and rebuild a happy future.
The particular circumstances of why couples end their marriages are endless, but just below the surface lies a recognizable pattern. For decades, psychologist John Gottman and his team studied divorce, and they identified four reasons most marriages end. These four dynamics can manifest themselves within a marriage in any number of ways, but they are the fuel for tension, disconnection, and ultimately, divorce:
When one or more of these are present and the marriages ends, each partner is often left with relational wounds that need care. Divorce recovery is an intentional time of healing past wounds and preparing for a bright future.
Healing from the loss of a marriage is often a unique and intensely individualized process. Factors that will affect recovery may include:
The counselors at Thriveworks Bastrop formulate an individualized treatment plan for each client that addresses specific needs and hurts.
There is no easy formula or quick fix that makes divorce recovery painless. It is okay to fall down, and often people learn just how strong they are as they get back up. Mistakes are part of the process, and so is asking for help. An experienced counselor who is familiar with the pitfalls of divorce recovery can be an invaluable guide on the journey.
If you are going through a divorce or if you have just finalized one, know that you are not alone. Thriveworks Bastrop has appointments available for divorce recovery. Our counselors understand the pain and grief, and we have helped many clients find healing and new life.
Going through a divorce is hard; scheduling therapy should not add to the difficult. When you call our office, a person will answer your call and help schedule an appointment. We offer evening and weekend appointments. New clients often have their first counseling session the same week of their first call. We also accept many forms of insurance.
