Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I was driving a school bus for teenagers attending an alternative school due to behaviors or substance use. When talking with the students on my bus, I recognized that many came from situations in which they did not have support. I started my education in the counseling field with this in mind. As I proceeded in my education, I worked in a substance use treatment facility. I worked with clients that were adult versions for the children I use to drive on the bus. This experience ignited a desire to be supportive to others. At the substance use treatment facility, I also worked with veterans. I come from a family with a long history of military service and want to assist those that have given so much for the way of life I enjoy.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients that have some sort of self-motivation. Those that desire a change in circumstance.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I enjoy working with clients that have survived a trauma and desire to learn coping skills to address symptoms that remain from these situations.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
You do not have to stay in a place (mentally or physically) that you consider unsafe or negative.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by seeing others over come challenges and recognizing that I have overcome many of my own challenges. Another thing that inspires me is seeing others live a life that is fulfilled in their own judgement.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In a first session with me, a client can expect some general get to know you questions. Having an understanding of a client can lead to the best work. Having a rapport between client and therapist can lead to a lasting bond that will build the frame work of a good therapeutic relationship.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I would like an individual leaving their first session to feel at ease with the session and looking forward to the next session. I hope to accomplish gathering information on the individual and providing information to them that will allow for a peace of mind about the therapeutic process.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Clients should know that I am willing to listen and I genuinely care about them and the circumstances they are experiencing.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy reading and spending time with my family. We may have dinner together or go to the movies, lake, or amusement parks as a group.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
The thing that defines me is my sense of family. I have 4 children by birth, 3 children that are shared with me by their mother, and two adopted children. However, I feel that family is not just defined by blood or by law. I believe it takes a village to make a strong and healthy society and as such, I hold my village as my family.
