Starting Anger management therapy

Can you get a therapist for anger issues?

Yes, there are therapists who help with anger via Anger management therapy. It's a therapeutic process that an individual goes through to manage their anger and identify its triggers. They're given clear instructions to improve their angry behavior as well as a safe space for opening up about their emotions.

How does anger management therapy work?

Once an individual's triggers are identified, anger management therapy focuses on helping the individual process and respond to these emotions in a more positive and productive manner. The anger management therapist will provide coping strategies and ultimately help their client take back control of their anger.

What are the 5 keys to controlling anger?

The five 5 keys to mastering anger includes identifying triggers, pausing before reacting, calmly expressing emotions, discovering constructive outlets for frustration, and seeking professional assistance if necessary. Acquiring these skills through Anger management therapy empowers individuals to effectively manage and navigate their anger.

What is the best therapy for anger management?

The best therapy for anger management often involves cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps individuals identify and change patterns of thinking and behavior related to anger.

Is anger management therapy conducted in person or online?

Anger management therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many sessions do I need for anger management?

Often, Anger management therapy lasts between 4-6 weeks. However, it can last longer, dependent on the individual's needs.

Need more help deciding?

When you’re confronted with a maddening situation, how do you respond? Are you able to take a breather or do you have an angry outburst? If you’re the latter, you could probably benefit from working with an anger management counselor. Anger management is the process of understanding when you are starting to feel anger, learning to relax, and then confronting the problem calmly. It’s important to remember that anger is a necessary emotion—it’s only an issue when we don’t react it or express ourselves appropriately.

“Use your anger for good. Anger to people is like gas to the automobile—it fuels you to move forward and get to a better place. Without it, we would not be motivated to rise to a challenge. It is an energy that compels us to define what is just and unjust.” –Arun Gandhi, The Gift of Anger

There are different ways to learn about anger management, but often, the most effective is working with an anger management counselor. These professionals have put time and hard work into learning skills, completing training, and gaining experience in anger management help. And they’re ready to utilize this toolbox to help you!

If you believe that you could find value in anger management, consider working with an anger management professional at Thriveworks Atlanta, GA. Many of our mental health professionals specialize in helping people with their anger issues, and they can help you too. They’ll likely lead you in discussions about how you’ve reacted to anger-inducing circumstances in the past and then teach you how to better respond in similar circumstances today. What Is Anger Management Counseling? Can It Help?

In any setting, anger management helps people identify when they are beginning to feel angry, relax, and then respond appropriately. Ideally, the individual should be able to stay in control of their behaviors. Now, you might need some anger management help if the following list describes you:

  • You struggle or fail to hold back your angry outbursts
  • You always focus on the negatives, never the positives
  • You become irritated and frustrated quickly
  • You constantly argue with others
  • You even get physically violent with others
  • You go as far as damaging property
  • You engage in overall reckless behavior

If you do struggle to keep your anger in check, don’t worry. A lot of people have anger issues, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. However, you should take it seriously and get the help that you need to control it. You can find that help here at Thriveworks Atlanta.

How Does Counseling for Anger Management Work?

Anger management can be worked on in individual therapy as well as couples therapy and group therapy. For example, if your anger is impacting your loved ones, your counselor might recommend they come to counseling with you (at least for a session or two). In addition, the duration of treatment will depend on your specific needs. It could last several weeks or several months; your counselor will assess your needs and then make a recommendation.

When you start counseling for anger management, your Thriveworks counselor will work with you to identify your triggers and (as we mentioned earlier) better understand when you’re starting to experience anger. For example:

  1. Stressors: There are likely some triggers or stressors that commonly lead to your feeling angry and acting inappropriately, such as traffic or fights with your loved ones or coworkers.
  2. Physical and emotional signs: In addition, there are likely some common physical and emotional signs of your anger. Think about it: How do you feel physically and emotionally when you start to feel angry? Do your muscles tighten up? Does your heard begin to race?

You can think about these stressors and signs of anger now, but don’t worry—your anger management counselor will walk through them with you in counseling, too!

My experience has been only outstanding. I was reminded routinely of upcoming appointments, my doctor was always punctual, and my session’s always left me feeling better because I was given an expert advice on how to go forward.

Overall, the experience has been good but my nurse practitioner forgot to refill my medication prescription before Christmas and now I’m out, waiting for everyone to get back from the holidays. I understand mistakes happen, but it super important to not forget to refill patient medications … that is something I don’t think deserves a lot of wiggle room for mistakes because it so fundamental to this profession.
