Starting Couples therapy

What is Couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Need more help deciding?

Often, we get trapped by this idea that our relationship should be perfect. That any issue signifies a troubled or unhealthy relationship. In reality, every relationship will encounter challenges. Each individual has their own thoughts, emotions, viewpoints. This means that we aren’t always going to see eye to eye with others, even with our partner. We might encounter difficult challenges, like jealousy, trust issues, financial strain, differing visions for our future together, which then cause us to pause and question the very foundation of our relationship.

“Lack of communication can drive a spike between two people wider than any physical distance.” –Mark W. Boyer

The couples counselors at Thriveworks Atlanta are here to remind you that every relationship will encounter challenges, such as those listed above. They are also here to help you work through these challenges together and further strengthen the foundation that your relationship is built on. These professionals have specific skills, experience, and training related to helping couples navigate their relationships.

If you think that you and your partner could benefit from working with a couples counselor, give us a call. You can reach us at (678) 804-7374. A member from our scheduling team will walk you through the simple scheduling process. Know that we have both in-person counseling and online counseling appointments available for couples. How Can Couples Counseling Help My Relationship?

We aren’t afraid to ask for help with our taxes; we don’t shy away from receiving a helping hand at the grocery store when an item is out of reach. We welcome guidance and support when we start a new job or pick up a new hobby. Why shouldn’t we do the same for our relationships? If anything, it’s more important to get help and support for our most important relationships.

If you decide to work with a couples counselor at Thriveworks Atlanta, your provider will get to know you, your partner, and overall relationship. They will work to understand any existing relationship issues, individual needs, and other factors that are unique to your relationship. Then, they will use their skills and tools to help you work through these issues together and improve your overall dynamic. Depending on your relationship needs, your couples therapist might help you to…

  1. Develop effective communication methods
  2. Manage relationship expectations
  3. Have difficult, but meaningful conversations
  4. Maintain the health of your relationship
  5. Adopt a loving, caring attitude towards one another

Again, your Thriveworks Atlanta, GA couples counselor will get to know your relationship first. Then, they’ll come up with a treatment plan tailored to you and your partner.

My experience has been only outstanding. I was reminded routinely of upcoming appointments, my doctor was always punctual, and my session’s always left me feeling better because I was given an expert advice on how to go forward.

Overall, the experience has been good but my nurse practitioner forgot to refill my medication prescription before Christmas and now I’m out, waiting for everyone to get back from the holidays. I understand mistakes happen, but it super important to not forget to refill patient medications … that is something I don’t think deserves a lot of wiggle room for mistakes because it so fundamental to this profession.
