Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I grew up surrounded by educators visiting classrooms and participating in community events with my family during my formative years. Helping others influenced my career path. My college professor introduced me to clinical social work which focuses on social systems theory and human behavior. This perspective is unique as it helps clients connect the dots internally and externally, which may help increase personal growth and development. Seeing clients smile, feel better and thrive keeps me connected to this profession.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I really like to work with clients who are motivated to do the necessary work to develop healthy coping skills. Of course that means I can work with a variety of clients, depending on the circumstances.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I like working with clients who have a sense of humor, love challenges, believe in themselves and willing to explore their pro's and con's. We all have gifts. I learn a lot from working my clients in this therapeutic journey.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish clients knew that therapists are not perfect and are always "under construction." We have to stay informed and do continuing education courses annually.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks is a new company to me, but it appears to be a well oiled machine.
What inspires you?
Music, poetry, and young people who get involved in making their world better for themselves and others.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I'm friendly and engaging I do a few ice breakers to help clients feel more at ease during the assessment process.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want clients to feel respected and build a' safe space" atmosphere where the can easily share their confidential information.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I use a solution focused interactive style which means I'm an active listener but I also will ask opened ended questions and help build rapport.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Cook homemade meals, go to restaurants and watch movies, spend time outdoors and exercise.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am honest and have a zest for life and being authentic.
