Starting Child therapy

What is child therapy?

Child therapy, also known as counseling for kids, helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst kids include behavioral issues, trauma, bullying, depression, and anxiety. All ages of children can attend and benefit from child-therapy at Thriveworks Atlanta.

How does child therapy work?

Child therapy works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the child's needs based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve play therapy for younger kids or cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks child therapists in Atlanta, GA have the expertise and experience to help kids at their level.

Play therapy vs child therapy

Child therapy is a type of therapy meant for clients within a specific age group, while play therapy is an approach to therapy that helps children with self-expression and stress relief, among others. Play therapy is a technique that is often used in child therapy to help children express what's running through their minds when they do not have the words to express their thoughts and emotions. It can get children to express what's wrong, what might be causing unwanted behaviors or what they might need, in a way that is accessible to them so that therapists can then work to treat the issue.

How to tell if my child needs counseling

It's not always obvious when a child should see a therapist for their behavior, though in the midst of challenges like divorce, loss, bullying, and other mental health conditions, it's often a good idea to seek it out. Common behaviors that can indicate a need for child therapy include separation anxiety, bedwetting (at inappropriate ages), and agitation/excessive irritability — especially if it reaches a point of physical violence.

What type of therapy is best for children?

Cognitive behavioral therapy at Thriveworks in Atlanta, GA is one of the best types of therapy for children. However, it can be administered in child therapy sessions in a variety of ways that are more accessible to young minds, such as play therapy.

Is child therapy conducted in person or online?

Child therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does child therapy last?

The length of child therapy depends on your child's needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, child therapy sessions will last for several months.

How much does child therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay a $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Need more help deciding?

Have you ever considered introducing your child or teen to a therapist? Child therapists, teen counselors, and adolescent counselors specialize in helping these young individuals. More specifically, they can help them better process and articulate their emotions as well as manage life challenges. A few examples of life challenges include: major life transitions like changing schools; mental illness, like depression, anxiety, or PTSD; or the death of a family member. Additionally, your child might find that working with a therapist is helpful throughout childhood as they encounter new experiences.

“All children should be taught to unconditionally accept, approve, admire, appreciate, forgive, trust, and ultimately, love their own person.” –Asa Don Brown

Childhood is generally a time of fun, play, laughter—but like adults, children also encounter challenges that they can’t always navigate alone. It’s important that we keep this in mind as we parent our kids and provide them with endless support. Now, sometimes, children and teens can benefit from a little outside support provided by a child therapist.

If you believe that your child or teenager could find benefit in child therapy, know that Thriveworks Atlanta is here for you. Our Thriveworks Atlanta child therapists, counselors, and psychologists are here to provide them with the extra assistance and support they might need. They can offer a nonjudgmental, safe space to talk through the challenges that are negatively affecting your child. To schedule your appointment, call (678) 804-7374.

What Is Child Therapy?

Child therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on addressing the mental health needs of kids and teens. As adults, there are certainly instances where we can benefit from an unbiased, nonjudgmental individual’s help and support. This is true for kids, too. Child therapists, adolescent counselors, and teen counselors serve these young individuals.

The child therapists at Thriveworks Atlanta, GA have skills, training, and experience specific to working with children. They fully understand what their developmental needs are; they can also recognize signs that your child or teen might be struggling and in need of extra support. Our child therapists utilize multiple treatments in therapy, including:

  1. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy rooted in the idea that our thoughts rule our feelings and our feelings rule our lives. The child therapists at Thriveworks Atlanta, GA might use CBT to help your child better understand their thoughts and how they impact their feelings, as well as their behaviors. CBT can also help kids understand and address behavioral, emotional, and social problems.
  2. Play therapy: Play therapy is often used in child therapy, as it helps kids to feel more comfortable in this unfamiliar setting. It can help children open up to their therapist about how they’re feeling and also empower them to learn valuable skills for processing as well as communicating their emotions.

If you think that your child or teen could benefit from meeting with a therapist, Thriveworks Atlanta is here to fill that need. We have many mental health professionals on staff who specialize in working with young individuals.

Common Reasons to Work with a Child Therapist

When kids act out and engage in destructive behavior, it’s often because they’re struggling with emotions that they don’t fully understand or know how to process. Our Thriveworks Atlanta child therapists can help your child to better understand, process, and communicate these emotions. In addition, they can help your child or teen in particularly stressful circumstances. Consider:

  • The death of a family member or loved one
  • Divorce or separation
  • Mental illness, like depression
  • Major life transitions, such as moving to a new town
  • Learning disorders, such as dyslexia

If you’ve observed odd behavior in your child, or you know they’re struggling, consider pairing them with a child therapist at Thriveworks Atlanta, GA. We’re here for them and for you.

Overall, the experience has been good but my nurse practitioner forgot to refill my medication prescription before Christmas and now I’m out, waiting for everyone to get back from the holidays. I understand mistakes happen, but it super important to not forget to refill patient medications … that is something I don’t think deserves a lot of wiggle room for mistakes because it so fundamental to this profession.
