What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in grief and loss counseling is CBT. I prefer CBT because it helps the client accept their loss and adjust to a new reality of life without their loved one. CBT for grief counseling is also an effective tool for recovering and processing grief and improving quality of life.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

I teach the following tools in grief & loss counseling: identifying negative thoughts and redirecting them into positive thinking; improving self-care (diet, sleep) and social support; working on understanding stages and symptoms of grief; identifying triggers; normalizing and processing feelings of anger, guilt, confusion which are present during the grieving process; practicing mindfulness; relaxation; journaling; creating new traditions to honor the loved one; and working on developing insight and new purpose in life.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief and loss counseling when they tell me they feel better (working in close collaboration with the client). I review the goals that were established with the clients at the beginning of the counseling process and examine their daily functioning.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in grief & loss counseling through group therapy, improving their engagement with the community (volunteering), engaging in self-care, and creating and achieving personal goals.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for their first grief and loss counseling session, individuals can work on accepting that the grief process is unique to each person. I recommend making sure that the client is very comfortable with the therapist before starting this challenging and sensitive journey. This will ensure comfort for a grieving individual and allow them to be more authentic in expressing and processing their feelings.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

What Thoughts and Feelings Come with Grief? How Am I Supposed to Feel?

We often loop sadness in with grief, but the truth is that there is a range of emotions one might experience after losing a loved one—and all of these emotions are normal. In addition to sadness, one might experience anger, confusion, regret, frustration, or fear. You might even bounce between these emotions over time, as you process and heal from the loss.

Our thought process can also change throughout our grieving process. One might focus on how the individual lost lived a happy and fulfilled life; or, they might enter a more troubled state of mind that focuses on everything they should have said to the individual that they now don’t have the chance to. And, of course, our behaviors can change as we experience these varying emotions and thoughts. One day you might bury yourself in school or work; the next, you might need to take a mental health day and stay home from school or work.

The grieving process is different for every single individual. It’s important that you don’t push down your emotions but instead allow yourself to move through them in order to heal properly. We know this isn’t easy—a grief counselor at Thriveworks Virginia Beach, VA (Great Neck can help.

John McAnulty is by far the best counselor that I have ever experienced. He is kind, compassionate and caring. He heard every word I would say and gave me so many tools that I use to this day to cope with my past struggles. He takes his time to not only listen, but to respond in the most caring way. I will forever be grateful for all he did for my family and I.
