What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is CBT, mindfulness-based therapy, and interpersonal therapy. I find the best benefit in using CBT to reframe and challenge distorted thinking, and mindfulness to bring awareness to their experiences, emotions, and thoughts.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression counseling:

  • Reframing thinking
  • Identify triggers
  • Breathing skills
  • Mindfulness/meditation
  • Physical movement
  • Mood charting/journaling
  • Social supports/community engagement

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they are engaging in self-care, using coping skills, and seeing improvements in mood and overall functioning.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling with journaling, exercise, meditation, socialization/community engagement, and group therapy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can educate yourself on what to expect from therapy and what you want out of therapy.

  • Heart palpitations.

Depression Symptoms

  • Intense emotions such as sadness and grief.
  • Unusually persistent emotions.

How Do Depression And Anxiety Develop?

Like in the case of other health conditions, there are various factors that may lead to the development of depression and anxiety. Family history and genetic elements are great predictors of the diseases. A person with a family history of depression or anxiety is, as research suggests, more likely to develop one of the disorders in response to traumatic life events such as loss of a loved one or a divorce. As a general rule, a trigger-like traumatic event or life episode is the key to understanding why some individuals develop depressive or anxiety disorders.

Vivian provides a welcoming conversational space for exchange. She is able to listen with genuine care and when the time is right give feedback that is both empathetic and constructive. If I have to share a problem with her that might be difficult to share with even a close friend, I feel she is able to help coach me along with a patient reassurance that my thoughts and feelings will be considered without judgment. There may not always be a direct or immediate answer to what I’m working through but she is able to encourage healthy thought-habits and emotional strategies which help me to progress. I really appreciate her respectful frame of mind and down-to-earth personality, they make talking with her worthwhile.
