What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Marie: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is acknowledging the awkwardness one feels at times doing telehealth for the first time. I prefer to ease into the sessions by explaining the process and finding out what their thoughts were coming into therapy in this modality.

Samantha: My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to try to build rapport and make people feel that this is still a safe space to share. I find the best benefit is to make it clear that we are here for them, that we still have boundaries (time-wise) but that we are here as they need.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Marie: I teach the following tools in online therapy the same way if one was attending in person, providing the same level of care: psychoeducation, CBT, anger management, relaxation/stress management, self-regulation, coping skills, and healthier communication styles.

Samantha: I teach the following tools in online therapy: All types of grounding skills/breathing techniques/coping skills, self-awareness, self-care, mindfulness, and anything else associated with why someone is presenting for therapy.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Marie: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they are open to completing tasks or exercises that allow them to discover more information about themselves, able to report positive outcomes with used and practiced coping skills, and review treatment plan goals and objectives with self-report and clinician observations during session.

Samantha: I know a client is making meaningful progress when they are trying to be more mindful and self-aware of how they talk about themselves or about others.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Marie: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by attending groups, finding hobbies and interests, and utilizing self-care strategies.

Samantha: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by finding support in other healthy ways and taking care of themselves in a positive way.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Marie: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can come prepared with questions you may want to address about therapy and how it works, the process, and consider the goals that you would like to implement to become the best version of yourself.

Samantha: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can be aware that a lot of background information is gathered (personal and family health history, both mental and physical), and just be prepared to share why you are seeking therapy.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Marie for years. Her work with her clients is unparalleled. She is clinically exceptional, while somehow maintaining an authenticity that makes working with her in any capacity a wonderfully positive experience. I would recommend Marie to anyone who is serious about helping themselves, and particularly those with a history of trauma.
