What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is the Gottman Method. I prefer the Gottman Method because it can help disarm conflicting verbal communication. It has structured steps that can help create a better foundation for a relationship. This method is helpful because it is structured.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling:

  • Managing conflict
  • Building love maps
  • The positive perspective
  • Creating shared meaning
  • Sharing fondness and admiration
  • Making life dreams come true together
  • Turning toward each other instead of away

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when communication is improving.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling with active listening and improving quality time. I typically like to make sure that, when my clients express their feelings to each other, they use “I” statements. I also encourage them to spend quality time with each other at least once a week.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can prepare to listen to your partner. I always tell my clients that when one person has to be right, it means the relationship loses.

She really listens to me and gives me alternatives to the ways I respond to stressors in my life. It is really personal and does not feel like on size fits all. I always leave our sessions feeling better. She also has great insight into what is going on in my life. She asks me if there is a thing in my past that is contributing to how I feel today. So we get to the root of the cause.

Amanda always validates my feelings and is great at talking me through what is happening in my head. She allows me to talk and get out what I need to then helps me analyze it to move past it. I am truly grateful for her. I was very afraid of restarting therapy with a new clinician but I can't say enough how appreciative I am of her.
