What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tools in sessions. I find CBT beneficial for treating depression since it helps to examine the thoughts often behind the depressed feelings and explores how worries and fears play a role in those feelings. These tools also help to explore specific strategies to recognize depressed thoughts more effectively and challenge these thoughts.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I use a variety of tools when helping clients to work on their depression. Here are some examples of tools or coping strategies that I'll utilize:

  • Gratitude journaling: This is a type of journaling exercise that helps to focus on practicing, which can often help with creating more positive emotions and thoughts.
  • Self-care strategies: This can involve taking care of ourselves in many ways, as depression can often affect our motivation to do so. When we talk about self-care, I'll explore how you feel your needs are being met mentally, emotionally, socially, physically, and spiritually, to explore areas of improvement and discuss more specific ways to cope with your depression.
  • Mindfulness strategies: These tools also help with staying in the moment and learning how to be more observant of thoughts and feelings, rather than getting lost in them.
  • CBT skills: Recognizing cognitive distortions, which are different types of thought patterns that we may have. Looking at core beliefs, which are beliefs that we have about ourselves, others, or the world around us, often deeply rooted in our past experiences. Overall, CBT provides tools to learn how to manage our thoughts more effectively when they feel unmanageable.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress when they report that the coping strategies they've been learning are helping them feel more positive, lighter, or more motivated. When clients share that they are feeling more at ease not always due to their depression going away completely, but feeling confident in their ability to manage the depression and state that they feel control over their depression, not that the depression is taking control of them.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by practicing more self-care and giving their minds time to rest and feel content with being in the moment. This can include a variety of activities, such as engaging in hobbies, practicing journaling exercises, exercising, or using meditations.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can identify some of the triggers for your depression and how it has been affecting your life. For example, some triggers may be: stress within the workplace, changes in my family, health problems, or grief/loss. Examples of how the depression is affecting you may be:

  • I'm not sleeping as well
  • I've lost my appetite
  • I have no motivation to do anything
  • I think more negatively than usual
Any background information will really help your therapist determine a plan for how they can best support you as you start your depression counseling treatment.

Need more help deciding?

Depression is a battle that many Americans fight every day. There’s nothing wrong with admitting that you may share the same fight with so many others—and often the first step is to reach out for assistance.

It’s important to seek help from a mental health professional to help support you in your journey, and for many people with depressive symptoms, depression counseling is the answer. At Thriveworks Paramus, NJ we offer depression counseling, both online and in person. We encourage you to consider whether talking with a depression therapist could help you improve your mental health and well-being.

What Is Depression Counseling?

Depression counseling is a specialized set of therapeutic approaches that seeks to minimize and help manage the short- and long-term effects of depressive symptoms and disorders.

Though depression is somewhat common, it affects each person differently. Some people feel depressed from time to time, going back and forth between emotional highs and lows, while others struggle with a persistent depressive disorder that never seems to go away. Here are some of the most common symptoms that depression therapy can assist in treating:

  • A loss of interest in the things you have always loved
  • An inability to take part in your normal routine
  • Trouble sleeping or getting up in the morning
  • Extreme mood changes
  • Changes in weight
  • Fatigue
  • A decrease in energy levels
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Difficulty focusing
  • A loss of self-esteem

If any of these apply to you, whether they are minor feelings or they are issues that are slowly taking control over your life, seeing a mental health professional at Thriveworks in Paramus, NJ could help you bring stability and fulfillment back to your life.

How Does Depression Therapy Work?

The treatment of depression at Thriveworks in Paramus, New Jersey involves a multi-faceted approach that is geared to meet your needs. Counseling sessions with a mental health professional will help you to examine possible triggers for your depression.

For example, you may learn cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies you can use to give yourself an emotional boost, like embracing a healthy lifestyle and learning how to better connect with those around you. Medication may also be important in successfully treating your depression, but it’s not a “magic fix”—and often works best with therapy, too.

The most important thing you need to remember is there is no shame in having a mental illness. You wouldn’t feel guilty or self-conscious over catching the flu or battling cancer, so you shouldn’t feel embarrassed to seek help for your symptoms of depression, either.

So far it's OK. I say ok because there is a big age difference between the therapist and myself. Maybe by 25yrs or so.
