About Lara

Lara Carter is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New Jersey. Lara’s goal for her clients is to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for every individual. She aims to help clients learn how to manage their mental health effectively and work toward their personal goals while prioritizing their mental and emotional well-being. She has experience working with adolescents, adults, and families with a variety of presenting concerns. Lara has a Master’s in Social Work from Rutgers University. Lara aims to help clients on their unique mental health journey by providing them with the individualized support that they need to grow. Some of the therapeutic approaches she uses to navigate these areas include cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered therapy, and motivational interviewing.

There are times when we need extra support to make it through the challenges we face. Lara helps empower clients to recognize their abilities to create positive changes and take back control even though life can be stressful. It takes incredible courage to reach out for help, and she is here to help when you are ready to start your mental health journey!

Get to know Lara

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

When I found out that it was possible to make a living out of helping people, I thought that there was nothing more fulfilling I could possibly think to do as a career! I love to hear about people's unique life stories that make them who they are.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I really enjoy working with adolescent populations. It's such an important time in people's lives and there are so many challenges that can be difficult to navigate, and I find it very meaningful to be able to help support clients during this transition.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I'm most excited to work with clients with a sense of humor. I love to laugh and think it's important that even though therapy can be serious work, we all take a moment to laugh sometimes and enjoy the moment!

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish clients recognized how big of a role that communication plays in our daily life and relationships. These themes come up so often, and it's something that I think almost everyone can benefit from exploring more.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

Thriveworks has the benefits of working at a large corporation, while still being grounded enough to recognize the ins and outs of being a counselor. Since Thriveworks is counselor-founded, the foundation of the company is based on helping counselors to grow and succeed while also providing high-quality care for clients. It's a win-win!

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

I will be asking questions to understand more about your background, such as if you've ever been in therapy before, what your support system is life, and any other personal, professional, medical, emotional, or mental health concerns that you have which brought you to therapy. Once I gather some background information then we will discuss how we can work together to achieve the goals or expectations that you have in mind.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

In the first session, I may ask a lot of questions but this is because I want to know about what brings you to therapy and understand your history. Typically our sessions will not be like playing 20 Questions, but it will be more of an open discussion because I want to hear from you and let you talk about whatever may be on your mind. I'm here to listen and provide support in any way that I can.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I'm a big animal lover so a lot of my free time goes towards taking care of my pets. Otherwise I like to go outside and spend time in nature to recharge, usually by going on a walk or a hike. I always love going out to restaurants and trying new foods to eat. I also like to bake and have been told I make the best banana bread ever!
