What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

In my work with people experiencing grief, whether it is the losing of a loved one, an important relationship, a job, a dream or goal that health or circumstance alters, I engage people with cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral mindfulness techniques to help practice acknowledging thoughts and feelings as they come, to help them to get in touch with their thoughts and emotions and express them in a safe space. Grief is as individual as the person experiencing it. It is not a linear process, there is no time limit. There are good days and hard days. It takes patience and time, get rest, nourish yourself, reach out to others, and to give yourself grace and compassion.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

I teach people mindfulness techniques to help manage difficult and uncomfortable thoughts and emotions, and how to use their body to help regulate their emotions through the use of grounding exercises and breath work.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

Progress is measured in small moments of success, tasks accomplished, new ventures, new or renewed friendships, increased activities. Grief never truly goes away, but as time goes on, we learn to live with it and find a sense of wholeness again.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in grief & loss counseling with spending time with loved ones, join a support group to talk with others who understand, exercise a little/move every day to boost feel good hormones, get good regular rest, eat regularly, engage in a hobby/creative outlet.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

Reaching out, making the call to talk with someone is often the hardest step of all so just come, don't worry about to bring with you. Just bring yourself and know that this is a safe, welcoming space for you and that together, we will walk through this. My favorite quote is from Lewis Carrol's Through the Looking Glass: 'If you can't look on the bright side, I'll sit beside you in the dark.'

Starting Grief & loss counseling

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in Leominster, MA have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Leominster, MA will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

Need more help deciding?

Losing someone you love is one of the most painful experiences known to humankind. This someone can be a family member, a friend, a mentor, a colleague, a pet. In any case, processing that this individual has passed, accepting this loss, and learning to move forward without the loved one lost is—for lack of a better word—challenging.

“One day, we will remember how lucky we were to have known their love, with wonder, not grief.” –Elizabeth Postle

What Is Grief? Am I Grieving?

Grief is not a science. One person might process their grief and loss by throwing themselves into their work; another individual might process their grief and loss by taking some time off of work. Neither way is the “correct” way, as we all cope and heal differently. That said, there are common thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in grief. You’ll likely experience a range of emotions, such as:

  • Sadness
  • Anger
  • Regret
  • Guilt
  • Confusion
  • Yearning

These emotions often depend on the circumstances that surround the loved one’s passing. For example, one person might be grieving the loss of a family member who passed after a long battle with cancer; another individual might be grieving a sudden passing that they didn’t expect. The first person will likely be better prepared to accept their loss, while the second individual will likely experience anger, confusion, and other difficult emotions in their grief. In any regard, a grief counselor at Thriveworks in Leominster, MA can help you work through these emotions.

What Can Grief Counseling Do for Me?

Millions of people find help and support in grief counseling. These individuals work with their grief counselors to address their traumatic loss, work through complicated grief, and find meaning in life again. Grief counselors are able to help their clients because they have immense knowledge about the grief process and healing. Here are a few important goals in grief counseling:

  1. Accepting your loss: Sometimes, the hardest part of your loss is accepting the permanence that this person is gone. Your Thriveworks grief counselor can help you completely understand and process that this individual is physically gone.
  2. Working through difficult emotions: Some people experience difficult emotions immediately—others experience their whirlwind of emotions much later. One goal of grief counseling is to express and explore whatever emotions you are feeling at the moment.
  3. Moving forward with your life: When you lose a loved one, your whole life changes. A grief counselor can help you adjust to life without this person, in a way that will still allow you to live a happy, successful life.

These are just a few goals that your grief counselor will have for you. If you’re ready to begin grief counseling, call Thriveworks in Leominster, MA today.

I think Shamni is great. She builds a good rapport with her clients and can bounce between upbeat and serious. I would appreciate if there was better updating of availability of therapists on third party sites.

I appreciate the fact that my therapist wants me to do more for myself and do things that are for me instead of always doing for other people. I also like the fact that Thriveworks has videos to watch to help with specific issues. I'm starting to watch some and it's very helpful so far.
