Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

My first inspiration would be counselor Troy from Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, I just started to follow my heart, and it led me here. After working at a school with children with severe special needs, I found that I loved working with children. There were other professionals at my school who had made a career of it who were social workers. My therapist at the time was also a social worker. So after talking with these people, I thought that being a social worker would be the best career for me. Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish that all my clients knew that being able to witness them go through amazing changes is so beautiful and lovely. I am truly grateful for all of the experiences that the people I work with share with me. They fill my soul with joy and light.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by people who never give up and keep going, even if they've been defeated. Additionally, I am inspired by the children and families that I have worked with over the years. I have worked with children and families that have been labeled as difficult or challenging. However, whenever I started working with them, I see the truth. Every family that I've worked with has loved each other, but they need help in properly expressing that energy.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

I will do my best to listen to the client and figure out what we can do with our time together to make a positive impact in their lives. I believe everyone's time is precious, so we will make the best use of it. This could mean a lively conversation, or it could mean many moments in silence.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

I take a very traditional approach to therapy, which means that I like to keep our boundaries clear and that anything I bring into the room is to serve and help the client. If the client feels otherwise, then the client should let me know. Additionally, maybe there are times when my client disagrees with me, which I hope that we can talk about.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I want to make sure that I know why they came to see me, develop appropriate interventions that the client will want to implement, and most importantly make sure that we are a good fit. I would rather the client tell me that I was not a good fit than keep meeting with me and feel like it was useless.

What types of clients do you work with best?

When I first started out, I wanted to just work with children. However, my mentor in social work school suggested that I work with adults to be better able to work with children. I ideally like to work with families. However, I like working with anyone who is seeking help. At this point in my career, I am also able to work with seniors or elders since they are some of the best history tellers.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am eager to work with anyone that is seeking help and the greatest need. Most of my career, I have worked with children, families, and adolescents. I also enjoy working with young adults as they transition to understand themselves better. I also enjoy working with seniors or elders. During my time in medical school, I learned that elders are most at risk for depression, so I hope to be able to mitigate that.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I hate dealing with paperwork, and Thriveworks will take care of that. Plus, I enjoy meeting with clients in person, so I am glad that Thriveworks has a location in my hometown. This allows me to stay close to my parents and see them often.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I love nature and being outdoors. I like to practice yoga, go to the gym, do CrossFit, and run. I also love reading. I'm usually reading multiples books at one time. I also love comics and spending time with my friends and family.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I believe my mind and body are sacred and gifts from the divine, which I need to cherish and protect. I make sure to keep a healthy diet and exercise frequently. I also make sure to take care of my own mental health, which helps me be a better person and stay focused on helping my clients.
