What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in individual therapy is CBT. I prefer CBT because helps patients become more aware of their thought patterns and how they affect their behavior.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I believe that people understanding their thoughts, behaviors, and feelings will help them to have a less complicated life. I teach about:

  • Cognitive distortions: Inaccurate thoughts that reinforce negative thought patterns and emotions
  • Filtering: How a person ignores all positive and good things in life and only focuses on the negative
  • Polarized/black and white/all or nothing thinking
  • Overgeneralization: Coming to broad conclusions based on a single piece of evidence
  • Jumping into conclusions: Faulty reasoning in how one makes conclusions (jumping into conclusions)
  • Catastrophizing (magnifying or minimizing): Expecting the worst will happen
  • Blaming: Blaming others for what goes wrong
  • Emotional reasoning: If we feel in a certain way, that must be true
  • And many others...

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when the client seems happy, is constantly meeting the treatment goals, and/or requests to meet less frequently and I agree (or vice versa).

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by following the counselor's suggestions, meditating, journaling, exercising, trying to improve sleep, trying to relax and reduce stress, spending time in nature, becoming self-compassionate, practicing mindfulness, setting boundaries, acknowledging personal feelings, being open to change, and much more.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can take time to relax and prepare yourself for the session, write down questions, write down your symptoms and your goals, schedule the session at a convenient time so you feel comfortable and not rushed, have realistic expectations that your issues will not be solved during the first session since therapy is a process, and give yourself credit for this taking first step.

Starting Individual therapy in Gainesville

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Vanessa Cumber has so much wisdom to share! She is an outstanding listener, incredibly empathetic, and the phrases she uses are very impactful in my life. . When I am anxious, I remember her words, and they calm me. She explains the why, of what I'm feeling. It truly helps to know the science behind my former trauma, and what triggers it today. Vanessa has educated me so much on what the research says. I've learned a ton about the brain.. I've told all of my friends about Vanessa, and they'd love to have a therapist like her! What a kind, caring, tremendous talent she is!
