What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My first approach when working with someone who has endured trauma is to let them know that we can go as slow as they need to. It's at their pace. Our time together needs to be a safe space.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach a lot of grounding tools to bring them back to the here and now. PTSD and trauma are associated with symptoms of flashbacks. Grounding yourself when this happens is so important.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I see progress when they are less able to avoid people, places, and things that are triggering to them.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can write their stories, paying attention to their senses. What did they see, smell, hear, or feel? Read it over and over each day. This will help to begin to give the traumatic experience less power.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients should know that I am with them on this journey and that they are not alone.

I cannot sing the praises of Thriveworks any louder; I have three professionals guiding me through a really rough time in my life. I didn't know how much I "needed" therapy until they started helping me see myself an my situations in an honest light. I look forward to continued growth with the support and guidance of my amazing team.
