What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

If you are struggling with a traumatic event, PTSD therapy can be helpful. The go-to approach for PTSD therapy is to work with clients on gaining power back and controlling the effects of the traumatic event. Once the client feels ready and has effectively shown the ability to engage in healthy coping skills, we will uncover the traumas that you may have experienced and explore the ways they could be influencing one's life. We will then use different techniques to help with the accompanying trauma symptoms and find ways to change thought patterns that may be associated with the trauma.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

Tools that you will learn while working in trauma therapy include:

  • Healthy coping skills
  • Mindfulness/being in the present moment
  • Healthy communication with those closest to you about what you have been experiencing
  • Understanding events that occurred and what is no longer a threat

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

In therapy, we will know if you are making meaningful progress when you have started to accomplish the goals that you set for yourself regarding the trauma you have faced. You will feel more at peace and less triggered by things that may be closely associated with the trauma.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

In their personal time, clients can supplement therapy by making sure they are taking care of themselves. Clients can practice healthy sleep habits, engage in routines, set themselves up for successful days, and be active in activities that they enjoy. I tell everyone to start off small—we all have 10 minutes where we can do something healthy for us.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

There is no need to prepare for the first therapy session. You can simply show up with an open mind, allow yourself to engage with your therapist, and be forthcoming with the experiences and feelings you are having. If you want to have something prepared beforehand, think of a goal that you would like to accomplish by coming to therapy.

Leanee is very honest and open with me which, in turn, helps me do the same. She asks insightful questions. Our sessions feel very natural & more like conversations than a doctor/patient dynamic, which also helps me share more openly.
