What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My go-to approach for treating anxiety is CBT/MI and to supply the client with a multitude of written relaxation techniques, use empathy/understanding, suggest a complete physical, and educate them. I find the best benefit in this approach because most people have never learned to relax or understand how anxiety can affect the way they act and react to different situations.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

I teach about the following in anxiety therapy:

  • Cognitive distortions: to recognize how negative thought patterns can spiral out of control, become more irrational, and cause increased anxiety.
  • Progressive muscle relaxation: to aid in recognizing how to release tension and reduce mental and physical stress by tensing and relaxing.
  • Positive thinking: using positive affirmations.
  • Benefits of exercising, deep breathing, journaling, changing sensory experience, and using a mantra.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they are able to report positive changes through observation.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy by participating in leisure activities, finding a new hobby, practicing skills, daily, learning in sessions, using positive affirmations, and referencing written information.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can review the client assessment.

Mr Sachs has been outstanding with his handling of our sessions. Personally, I believe that therapy/counseling is truly a personal experience and the therapist needs to be matched to the patient as much as the patient with the therapist. I feel like he was a perfect fit for what we needed with our sessions.
