Nancy Lloyd is a Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes in relationship issues, grief and loss, life transitions, depression, eating disorders, trauma, recovery from substance abuse, anxiety, gender issues, and symptom management for chronic problems. She has gained experience both in private practice and community mental health services after graduating from The Citadel Graduate College in 2010. Nancy primarily works with adults but has notable experience with adolescents and children when providing interventions for families. She also has a decade of experience as an Adjunct Psychology Instructor and has a passion for providing psychoeducational information as an important supplement to understanding ourselves and our brains.
Nancy is a general practitioner with the ability to provide evidence-based interventions (CBT, TFCBT, DBT, MI, REBT, ACT, or Crisis Intervention for instance) for a very wide scope of acute and chronic conditions. My go-to approach for grief and loss counseling is to first start creating a safe place to process the loss and grief that you may be experiencing. In therapy, I will use a combination of tools and techniques to help you work through grief. I will use CBT techniques to work on the negative thoughts accompanying the grief and target any behaviors that are involved. We will start to develop a new narrative about the loss that you are experiencing.
Tools that we will focus on in grief and loss therapy:
I know a client is starting to make meaningful progress in grief and loss counseling when there are fewer negative thoughts and feelings about the loss. I will see that the client dwells less on the situation and rather starts accepting the loss.
In their personal time, clients can supplement counseling by making sure they are taking care of themselves. Practicing healthy sleep habits, engaging in routines, setting themselves up for successful days, and being active in activities that they enjoy are all great ways to practice this. I tell everyone to start off small—we all have 10 minutes where we can do something healthy or beneficial for us.
There is no need to prepare for grief and loss counseling—simply show up with an open mind. Allow yourself to engage with your therapist and be open with the experiences and feelings you are having.
