My main approach to working with depression is a combination of inner regulation work, trauma work, and self-care/gratitude work. I find this is the best way to work with depression, as it deals with many of the common causes of depression and allows clients to fully build tools, skills, and understanding of their depression, all while getting support and building a sustainable change in their life that allows them to manage their depression and eventually minimize or eliminate it.
In counseling for depression, I help clients build affirmations skills, positive neuron formation, self-care skills, emotional understanding, emotional resilience skills, meditation/mindfulness, additional coping skills, and breathing skills.
I know a client is making progress with depression when symptoms start to lessen and the clients begin to express more hope and confidence in their ability to move forward, as well as when I see an increase in energy and activity.
Outside of therapy, clients should focus on their current homework and large amounts of self-care in order to maintain the emotional energy needed to work through depression.
To prepare for a first session, open yourself up to the idea that things may be uncomfortable but also work to know that you are here to get support and it is nothing to be embarrassed about or ashamed of. Many people struggle with this and its ok to need help!
