What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

When working with couples in counseling, I use the Gottman Method to help them meet their relationship goals and work toward the life they have imagined together. I prefer the Gottman Method because it offers a more holistic approach to couples therapy. Oftentimes, couples therapy focuses only on communication and conflict resolution skills. While these skills are an important part of the process, the Gottman Method takes therapy a step further by helping couples remember what brought them together and motivating them to develop shared dreams for the future.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

Some of the tools that I teach couples include:

  • Strategies for reconnecting on an emotional level and understanding how one's partner views the world. This includes gaining an understanding of each partner's values and priorities, as well as what helps them feel loved and supported in the relationship.
  • Emotion-focused communication and conflict resolution skills. These skills are designed to help each partner feel heard and to help couples overcome common negative communication patterns in the relationships.
  • Building shared dreams and goals in the relationship. This skill helps couples to plan a future that both partners are excited about. It also promotes feelings of teamwork and unity in the relationship.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

Some of the indicators of progress that I often see in couples therapy include increased positive interactions between sessions, partners demonstrating a desire to understand the other's point of view, and expressions of excitement for shared goals for the couple's future. Additionally, couples will report increased participation in quality time activities, as well as the ability to communicate emotions through more difficult or unpleasant conversations.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

I encourage couples to set aside time to practice the skills discussed between sessions to help them build confidence and connection. This can include emotional check-in conversations, scheduling intentional quality time, expressing curiosity about your partner's world, taking time to dream together, and so much more.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

If you are considering couples counseling here are a few questions I would invite each partner to reflect on and bring to the first session:

  • What are some of the strengths that we experience in our relationship?
  • What are some of the areas that we find difficult to discuss or experience conflict in?
  • What helps me feel loved, supported, and connected to my partner?
  • What areas would I personally like to grow in within our relationship?
Couples counseling can be a beautiful, yet challenging process of growing together. So, in addition to reflection on the above questions, I would encourage coming to the counseling session with an attitude of openness toward your partner's point of view and a willingness to be honest with your partner about your emotions. These can be some of the first steps in building a meaningful and connected life together.

Working with a Counselor or Therapist: Does It Work?

After days, weeks, even months of trying to resolve specific issues with your partner, it can feel overwhelming. Remember that all couples go through difficult times and you’re not alone. There is no clear-cut way to work through the challenges you’re facing. However, the counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in Northeast Raleigh, NC have the skills, education, and training to help you tackle your issues.

When you first begin your sessions, your clinician will work to understand you and your partner’s individual needs and concerns. Doing so will help them take a more in-depth look into the root causes of what’s going on and provide you with a customized treatment plan for your relationship. Doing so, they will teach you tools and tricks to use in managing future conflicts and de-escalating stressors. Some of the tools could include:

  • Communication techniques
  • How to actively listen to your partner, not just “hear” what they are saying
  • Identify the root problems of your relationship
  • Increase respect and understanding for each other

These are just a few of the things you can learn during your time with the clinicians at Thriveworks in Northeast Raleigh. Again, we’re here for you and will do everything we can to help you improve your relationship.
