What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

Dretha: My go-to approach for individual therapy is helping someone examine their thoughts, feelings, and responses, as well as looking at patterns of relationships in their lives. I believe this is helpful for understanding and for making positive changes.

Christina: Every person is unique. When it comes to therapy, I try to find the best strategy for the client's needs. Clients benefit when therapy is tailored to their needs.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

Dretha: The tools I help people in individual therapy develop include strengthening self-awareness, strengthening other awareness, deep breathing techniques, sensory techniques, journaling, and the 5-4-3-2-1 exercises for being aware of sights, sounds, thoughts, and feelings.

Christina: Journaling is an essential skill in therapy. It helps focus thoughts and helps client remember important events in their life.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

Dretha: I know a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when the client shares positive changes in their thoughts, feelings, and responses to their stressors and also expresses improvement themselves.

Christina: My clients get regular updates on their progress. They usually know the progress is meaningful when their symptoms begin to improve and they feel more at ease with their authentic self.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Dretha: Clients can supplement their time in individual therapy by utilizing the strategies they are learning in therapy, reading appropriate books, and leaning on their network of support.

Christina: During personal time, I recommend that clients take time out for journaling and self-care.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

Dretha: To prepare for your first individual therapy session, you can be committed to showing up and willing to be honest in the session.

Christina: Preparing for therapy simply involves making the first step to reach out and call. If you want to prepare, make a list of things in life that have caused you distress so that you can be specific in your needs.

Starting Individual therapy

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as individual-counseling, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where they can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Can individual therapy help me?

Is individual therapy conducted in person or online?

How long does individual therapy last?

The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.
