What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for working with depression is a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and medication management. I find the best benefit when clients change unhealthy/irrational thoughts about themselves because it is a skill that can be applied in lots of situations.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

The skills I teach in depression counseling are:

  • Refraining from negative self-talk: This involves identifying negative self-talk and identifying healthy alternative thoughts.
  • Thought-stopping: Learning ways to stop thinking about things that spiral out of control.
  • Self-care: Getting involved in activities that naturally help people feel good, like healthy exercise/diet, spending time with friends, and healthy sleep patterns.
  • Meditation and mindfulness: Part of changing negative self-talk is re-wiring neurological connections, so we do a number of skills related to mindfulness and visualizing health and wellness.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in the treatment of depression when they are doing the things they normally like to do, genuinely smiling, and talking about things that make them feel better.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by journaling, doing thought logs and thought experiments (that are discussed in session), exercising each day, and taking medication (if needed/desired) as prescribed.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for depression counseling, individuals can remind themselves that they can and will get better and that therapy works.

Thriveworks makes everything easy and seamless. I appreciate having providers that are able to connect and see progress notes because they are part of the same system. My therapist, Paula O'Leary, is an absolutely wonderful therapist and is helping me transform my life. She is able to work with me in the way I need it and helps me more every single session. Additionally, my Psychiatrist Dr. Ileana Asanache is also spectacular and is the only psychiatrist I've ever felt comfortable with. She listens to my concerns and needs and eases me into every medication/transition so that I am comfortable. This new med regimen she has me on has literally changed my life for the better. I the following diagnoses: Bipolar 2, Anxiety, PTSD, Nightmare Disorder, and we are exploring a SUD disorder as well. They have helped me not just with my mental health, but my addiction, my career, my relationships/boundaries, and overall are helping me improve my life immensely.

I appreciate her identifying my tells in my body language and helping me see them as well. She lets me talk through my experiences. She validates my experiences and has shed light on them with her objective perspective. She was honest enough to tell me when I needed more support and refer me to an IOP program. I am thankful for that. She educates me on her techniques and talks through strategies. .
