Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I began working in the corrections field shortly after college and during the time there, I interacted with many incarcerated people who may not have resulted to criminal behavior had they been able to access quality mental health care. I was inspired to become a therapist in hopes that my subsequent experience and expertise would help people from any walk of life feel empowered to take control of their mental health and lead productive lives.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are motivated, open-minded and willing to engage in the treatment process.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with clients who are wanting to find solutions to issues related to depression, anxiety, and trauma.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that they already have the solutions to their problems and there is no shame in needing assitance with accessing those solutions during difficult times.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose Thriveworks because the platform would allow a further reach to clients with options to work in person, through telehealth, or through a hybrid schedule. I was also attracted to the company's approach to flexibility and incentives that are offered to therapists.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by people who are committed to making their lives better and more enjoyable despite the circumstances they face. On a more personal note, I am directly inspired by therapists of color who are working in our communities to end the stigma of mental health that has kept people from appropriately and adequately addressing their mental health.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect their first session to be about building rapport by talking about what makes them feel safe and supported, and what they want their treatment experience to look like.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to gather the necessary information to properly diagnose and engage the client in treatment planning.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
Clients should know that I take a compassionate approach to helping them do what is necessary, even if it is not desired, to identify and implement effective solutions to their problems.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I like to spend time with family and friends, attending local events, and using creative writing to process my day/week.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My personality is consistent with everyone I encounter.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
I worked with a client who entered the group therapy program with severe depression and suicide ideation due to finances and struggles with connecting to their purpose in life. We worked on identifying their values and challenging their negative self-beliefs to develop an action plan for them to begin living according to their values and to begin pursuing their career goals. When the client was discharged, they were very optimistic about their future and was no longer having suicide ideation.
