Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I decided to become a counselor because I care for the individuals I work with and enjoy seeing the progress in people as they feel supported and can process life's challenges. I want to provide a space for individuals to be able to talk openly and freely about their identity and the life they have led. When we have someone that believes in us and supports us along the way, we can do anything we set our mind to.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I like working with individuals who are open and honest about their feelings and experiences. I work best with clients who are serious about their mental health and are looking to make changes to improve their mental health and lives overall. I prefer when clients are invested in their own mental health and are willing to do the work that is necessary for them to live the life they want and deserve.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with individuals from diverse populations. In my Women's & Gender Studies, I focused on the female and LBGTQI+ perspectives and seek to provide a safe environment for people to explore who they are and what matters to them.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
While seeking therapy can be daunting at first, it is the most worthwhile and important version of self-care we can do. Some days it may be hard work, but taking the time to show up for yourself and take care of your mental health is always worth it. Hang in there, it gets better!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I strive to provide ethical and conscientious practice to the individuals we serve. As a social worker, I am always looking to improve and educate myself on the best way to support clients and what is the right step to take. I like the ethical and professional environment that Thriveworks provides. It seems that Thriveworks genuinely cares for clients and their mental well-being.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by nature and the profound beauty we can find in the world around us. I am inspired by the peace you can see in the gentle breeze and waves in the ocean, and the immense grandness of the mountains. We can all learn from nature, about instincts and the choices we make on a daily basis. I am inspired by kindness and the bravery I see in clients each day as they wake and up keep going, even if it is hard to do so.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In our first session, there will be a lot of questions. I know that is daunting, but it is so I can understand more of your story and get to know who you are. Once we have the overview in the initial session, we can discuss the pieces that fit into the puzzle of who you are and what you want in life in the following sessions.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In our first session, I want you to get comfortable talking with me. I would like to get to know who you are and hopefully you will feel that you can talk to me about anything without judgement. I am here to listen and learn, never to judge.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I am starting out on my supervision journey, but have been working with individuals in a clinical and social work setting for five years. I have worked with individuals with eating disorders, anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma histories, grief and loss, the child welfare system, and many other challenges in life. While I may not have experienced all that everyone else has, I try to understand at our core, we all want to belong, be loved, and cared for in some way or another. Regardless of your various identities and background, you deserve kindness and respect, and I plan to show you that in our sessions.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I take my dog on walks in the city and out in nature. We love to go on hikes and are still exploring all that makes Richmond a unique place to live. When I am not out in nature or walking, I am listening to true crime podcasts, reading with my nose in a book, or cooking.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I have a caring and sympathetic heart. I firmly believe that we all deserve love, kindness, and respect. I strive to serve and support those I work with. Everyone deserves to be greeted with a kind smile and someone that is willing to listen to them, and I do that with each person I encounter.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
My biggest success with a client has been supporting a mother who was in a domestic violence relationship through the process of recognizing her husbands substance abuse addiction, improving her own mental health status, and making the decision to leave and care for her children on her own. Throughout the year and a half I worked with the family, I built rapport with the mother and went from being cussed out and kicked out of her home to her feeling supported and sad when it was time for the professional relationship to end. She was able to develop a belief in herself and her abilities to care for her children on her own and sought independence. Throughout the year and a half, she was able to open up and confide in me the abuse and struggles she faced, and through that time, I was able to assist her in finding her own home and employment. I continued to remind her of her worth as an individual and built up her confidence to seek the life she wanted.
