What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

I do not feel that one approach is effective with everyone in treating anxiety, so I draw on many different approaches. I use a cognitive behavioral approach for anxiety to help draw on what you have used in dealing with anxiety, what has been effective, and what you need to change.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

In working with anxiety, we will discuss coping skills that have been effective along with coping skills that may work for you. I sometimes assign tasks for you to try when you are away from sessions and dealing with anxiety. We will come back to determine what worked for you.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they are starting to report a reduction in anxiety or when they are starting to use coping skills without being reminded.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy by trying skills that they think will work and by discussing what coping skills they have used when they feel anxiety.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for your first anxiety session, you can be prepared to discuss your anxiety. What causes your anxiety? What has helped it? If you're taking medication, what medications are you taking and what medications have you tried?

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Hoffman Estates, IL can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Hoffman Estates therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

What Is Anxiety Therapy?

The goal of anxiety therapy is to offer guidance and support, mitigate symptoms of anxiety disorders, and give people tools to help them manage their symptoms. This can be done through psychotherapy or medication, or often both simultaneously.

Though medication cannot cure anxiety, they can bring symptoms down to a manageable level, allowing someone with anxiety to function more easily in their daily life and spend more energy sorting through the mental ramifications of anxiety.

This is why psychotherapy is an important part of healing anxiety. Anxiety presents physical symptoms, such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, and even panic attacks, but without identifying triggers and getting to the root of what is causing the anxiety, it is difficult to fully treat it.

How Does Anxiety Counseling Work?

Therapy can help with anxiety in multiple ways, depending on what’s triggering the client’s anxiety and what the root causes are. But therapy helps people with anxiety every day through the following approaches:

  • CBT and DBT
  • Exposure therapy, especially for specific phobias of objects or situations (also called systematic desensitization)
  • Strength-based approaches
  • Person-centered approaches
  • Emotion-focused therapy
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Mindfulness
  • Relaxation techniques like deep breathing
  • Trauma-informed therapy
  • Anxiety medications like antidepressants
  • Supportive-expressive therapy
  • Biofeedback
  • Support groups
  • Substance abuse and addiction counseling
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy (EMDR)
  • Lifestyle modifications
  • Stress management
  • Meditation
  • Family therapy or couples counseling

How Does DBT Therapy Work?

Dialectical behavioral therapy uses cognitive behavioral techniques to help clients manage mental health conditions like mood disorders or personality disorders. The idea behind DBT is that clients should work toward acceptance of their medical condition at the same time as they work to change it. It helps people identify the negative thinking and belief patterns that can cause distress and unhealthy behaviors. Through acceptance and hard work, people can learn to modify their thoughts and discover better ways of functioning in the world.
