Starting Couples therapy

What is Couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Need more help deciding?

Do you remember when you first fell in love? You may be able to recall the clothes you wore, the music playing on the radio, or maybe even the smells in the air when you met that special person. Everything was magical – it was perfect. You were in love and was going to last forever.

But things are not “perfect” anymore. Relationships are not easy. You may not even be sure when or how it happened, but one thing is certain, you’ve never felt more disconnected from each other than you do right now. You’re together, but both of you are telling two separate versions of the same story. And now, you’re wondering how much longer you’re going to be able to make this work.

If any of this sounds like your love story, be encouraged. There is hope for your relationship. You don’t have to break up. You can save your marriage. At Thriveworks Couples Counseling of Greenville, we want to join you on your journey of healing. Restoring and strengthening any relationship is difficult and many couples find it hard to achieve lasting results on their own. We understand this – that’s why we’re here.

Our couples counselors are leaders in the counseling field. They’re highly trained, respected, and fully licensed. Our providers are the perfect choice to help you work on your relationship issues. We use respected and insightful resources (like the PAIR Test) and offer a comfortable and discrete therapy environment. We know that your schedules are already busy, so we even have creative options that offer more time to work on your relationship goals. (864) 952-4048

Your relationship deserves a fighting chance. Let Thriveworks Couples Counseling of Greenville give you the support you need to heal, change, and grow together. One thing is for sure, if you do nothing, you’ll be no better off than you are right now. In time, your relationship will become unhealthy (if it hasn’t already), you and your partner will likely have even more unmet needs, and the odds of you staying together will plummet. You have an opportunity to do something about these things right now. You have a chance to work on your relationship. You have a choice – what will you do?

What issues are appropriate for couples counseling?

There are many reasons why couples struggle in their relationship with each other. Some issues are related to specific seasons in life. Others are more behavioral. Some common issues for couples include:

  • Financial issues
  • Loss of a job
  • Parenting
  • Infidelity
  • Addictions
  • Family dynamics
  • Blended families
  • Religious or political differences
  • Anger management
  • Death of a child

There are many other reasons why couples seek counseling to improve their relationships. Many couples have lived with these issues for years, so it can be difficult to change these patterns without help. Thriveworks Couples Counselors can help you identify the cause of your relationship issues and work with you to develop a plan to change negative patterns and behaviors. We can help you strengthen your relationship.

How can couples counseling help us?

If you and your partner are committed to making a change in your relationship, a Thriveworks Couples Counselor can help you make that change. It may not be easy, but it is worth it and you can do it. Couples counseling can help you:

  • Improve communication
  • Resolve conflict and past hurts
  • Learn to listen to each other
  • Develop mutual respect
  • Foster intimacy
  • Identify relationship issues

Kathleen Horn was so understanding and non-judgmental. She was really nice to work with and had a way of making me look at and think about things differently. She worked with me on coping skills and changing my thoughts so I could change behaviors and feel better. She helped me through a tough time and now I feel a lot less depressed and anxious. I would go to her again. Thank you for all of your help!

LaKimberly Dowdell was an excellent counselor. She was a great listener, while at the same time knowing precisely the right moment to provide her expert knowledge. She is very personable and caring, yet knows what to say to support the change you are seeking. I highly recommend her.

The only reason why my Family stopped going to see Ms. Dowdell is because I had to change jobs and at the time my schedule would not allow us to continue services. She made sure my Family had a great transition to another Provider and that we had continuity of care. Now that my schedule has a little more flexibility, I am very thankful to be able to continue services with Ms. Dowdell who still remembers my Family’s history like we were just in her office yesterday (over 1 year ago)! She listens intently and never puts you down, and helps you understand your emotions and what issues and problems you may be going through in a way that you can understand but clearly. Personally, I deal with a lot of stress and being pulled in a lot of directions, and would when I felt as though my words did not make sense coming out of my mouth, she would know how to piece together what I was saying and not make me feel bad for being too vulnerable and made my therapy sessions a safe space to learn and grow from them. I am forever grateful for how she is helping my Family accept what we need to accept, change what we need to change, and heal from the root of our wounds; wounds I did not know were there. I highly recommend her.

Emily was the first therapist I had ever gone to after thinking for a long time it would be good for me. I was stuck in a rut and repeating patterns and using coping skills that were no longer helpful to me. She helped me work through many of my personal issues, some which had been stewing since childhood. She always knew when to push and when to back off if a certain issue was too sensitive at that time. She is honest yet kind. I was sad to see her move out of Chicago but I will forever be grateful for the tools she helped me to develop for dealing with the sh**show that life can be sometimes. She helped me get back into alignment with who I really am as a person. I would highly recommend her for anyone who is struggling or even just looking for a little more balance in their lives.

Emily has been an amazing help in my life for the past couple of years. She helped me see my worth when I couldn't see it myself. She helped me with my grief after losing my father. She helped me overcome my addictions with drugs and alcohol. She taught me to be kind to myself and that everyday is not gonna be an amazing day and that's okay. She helped me accept that I don't have to know the outcomes to big life changes that it's best to go with the flow, wear life like a loose garment. Emily is such and amazing counselor and I am forever grateful for everything she helped me see. Emily cares tremendously and I know deep in my heart she is gonna continue being the sunshine in many more client lives. Emily has made a huge impact on my life and I don't think I will ever find a counselor as down to earth as she is. Chicago misses you already!!! :) :) :)
