What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

A good go-to approach for helping people in family therapy is Family Systems therapy. it is a form of therapy that assists in finding reconciliation within family relationships. Founded on the concept that each family member contributes to the health of the family system

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

Some of the tools that could be used in family therapy are:

  • Role Play- this can give each member a chance to see how other members of the family see them
  • Letters and Journaling- this can help family members express feelings and emotions they couldn't otherwise verbally express

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

You know a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy when forgiveness is expressed and resentment, hatred, malice, and hurt are gone.

A client can supplement their time in family therapy with self-care activities, mindfulness training, and meditation

Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Charlotte, NC usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Charlotte, NC offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Need more help deciding?

Ask anyone what is most important to them in life and they’ll likely say their family. These are the people we care about more than anything else in the world—we love and support them and they love and support us. They also, in more ways than one, define us. We hope to find that life partner, and we hope to raise beautiful children. We work hard to make our parents proud, and we work hard to provide for our spouse and our kids.

“Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights. And our comfort when we occasionally falter.” –Brad Henry

All of that being said, family matters aren’t always rainbows and butterflies. Because these people play such significant roles in our lives, we’re bound to run into challenges: we’re certain to disagree, argue, and experience difficulties that threaten the very fabric of our families. So, when this happens, what do we do? What should we do?

You don’t have to face these challenges blindly. Instead, you can work with a family therapist who is trained to help people with problems that cause strain on their family. If your family has been confronted with a serious problem, encountered a curveball, or is struggling in any other sense, a family therapist at Thriveworks Charlotte can help. Take charge of the fate of your family and let us assist you.

Is My Family in Trouble?

It’s normal to fight and disagree with our loved ones. However, there are some particularly difficult experiences within the family dynamic that can threaten our mental health and wellbeing. These include:

  • The death of a loved one
  • Serious injury or disability
  • Financial strain
  • Loss of a home or job
  • Diagnosis of a serious illness
  • Domestic abuse
  • Codependency

If your family is afflicted by one of the above crises, it’s important you seek professional help. These challenges pose a particularly dangerous threat of seriously harming one’s health and wellbeing, not to mention changing your family dynamic as you know it. You might feel hesitant to reach out for help because you’re embarrassed about your current situation. However, you shouldn’t be. Counselors dedicate their work to helping clients out of whatever rut they’re in. They understand, better than anyone else, that life comes with its unique challenges and we can’t always solve these problems alone. They don’t just want to help, they are eager to help.

How Can Family Therapy Help?

While resolving your family issues might feel impossible, the truth is that we do have the power to resolve our differences… sometimes we just don’t know how or where to start. That’s where a family therapist comes in. Family therapists can:

  1. Instill healthy systems for sorting through disagreements amongst family members.
  2. Equip family members with helpful tools for communicating more effectively.
  3. Explore and discuss ways for the family to support one another.

The therapists and counselors at Thriveworks Charlotte are devoted to helping families through or over whatever obstacle stands in front of them. Additionally, they want to help families stay strongly connected and continue to support each other through the ups and the downs of life.

I just wanted to say that Dr. Patricia Krikorian is a gem! She was my college professor and taught my Counseling class. She required us to be students of excellence because she is a woman of excellence. She passionately cares about helping anyone who needs guidance on how to navigate through life difficulties. She has many years of experience in her craft and takes pride in helping many throughout her career. She is by no means a novice and is well-respected by me and others.
