Starting Child therapy

What is child therapy?

Child therapy, also known as counseling for kids, helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst kids include behavioral issues, trauma, bullying, depression, and anxiety. All ages of children can attend and benefit from child-therapy at Thriveworks Boise.

How does child therapy work?

Child therapy works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the child’s needs based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve play therapy for younger kids or cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks child therapists in Boise, ID have the expertise and experience to help kids at their level.

Play therapy vs child therapy

Child therapy is a type of therapy meant for clients within a specific age group, while play therapy is an approach to therapy that helps children with self-expression and stress relief, among others. Play therapy is a technique that is often used in child therapy to help children express what’s running through their minds when they do not have the words to express their thoughts and emotions. It can get children to express what’s wrong, what might be causing unwanted behaviors or what they might need, in a way that is accessible to them so that therapists can then work to treat the issue.

How to tell if my child needs counseling

It’s not always obvious when a child should see a therapist for their behavior, though in the midst of challenges like divorce, loss, bullying, and other mental health conditions, it’s often a good idea to seek it out. Common behaviors that can indicate a need for child therapy include separation anxiety, bedwetting (at inappropriate ages), and agitation/excessive irritability — especially if it reaches a point of physical violence.

What type of therapy is best for children?

Cognitive behavioral therapy at Thriveworks in Boise, ID is one of the best types of therapy for children. However, it can be administered in child therapy sessions in a variety of ways that are more accessible to young minds, such as play therapy.

Is child therapy conducted in person or online?

Child therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does child therapy last?

The length of child therapy depends on your child’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, child therapy sessions will last for several months.

How much does child therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we take most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay a $0-$50 co-pay per session. However, there are also self-pay options that sit around $200 per session, depending on the service and location, for those who are out-of-network.

Miko has always preferred her own company. While other parents encouraged their children to try band, ballet, and baseball, Miko’s parents have always let Miko pursue solitary activities.

Now a teenager, Miko doesn’t have any close friends. She spends most of her time and energy drawing characters and writing stories about their daily lives. When her classmates approach her to talk, her responses come out as robotic and cold because she isn’t used to interacting with others. After a while, they stop approaching her at all.

One of her teachers is worried about her. He notices that she’s a good student but that she behaves differently from the other quiet kids in class. She doesn’t respond to criticism or praise, and she seems fearful of group activities.

He calls Miko’s parents in to talk. They explain that Miko has always been this way, and Miko’s teacher suggests that they seek additional resources to help adjust better socially.

Miko’s parents contact a provider at Thriveworks. Within a couple of days, the family is chatting with a licensed psychiatrist. She diagnoses Miko with schizoid personality disorder and creates a customized treatment plan for her that includes group therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. In time, Miko learns how to better interact with others and to mitigate the symptoms of her disorder.

How Does Therapy for Children Work?

Child therapy addresses the specific needs of children and young adults. Because children are still in the developmental and growth stages of life, caring for them requires specific expertise.

When treating children, therapists may use a variety of treatments. These can include the following:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which encourages children to reframe the way they handle problems
  • Play therapy, which uses play to address topics that might otherwise be difficult to address
  • Narrative therapy, which teaches children to be the owners of their experiences
  • Music therapy, which uses music to help reduce anxiety and stress

Medication, meditation, and other treatment options may also be part of your child’s treatment plan. If you believe that therapy or counseling can help your child or teen, set up an appointment with us at Thriveworks in Boise, ID. I have been working with Jared for over a year now. When I first started with him, I was apprehensive about going to a new therapist. I was with one before and did not have much success. After my first session, I knew he was the right fit for me. My spouse had already been going for a while, so we were able to compare experiences. One thing we noticed was how Jared adapted his therapy style to each of us. We then started couples therapy with him. He has been a God-send for us in helping us work through our issues. We were able to uncover things about us that made us stronger as a team. I cannot recommend Jared enough. He is truly amazing and a master of his craft.

I met Jared @ an Out-Patient program back in 2012. I was going going threw so much at work & home and was in much need of guidance! While I HATED being there, I knew something needed to change. Somehow through out the years, I had lost my Voice. I no longer could balance what we call LIFE. Being a Wife, Step-mom, Business Woman, the Pilar to my immediate family & finally having my own child, took a toll on me...I could no longer function! While in this program, Jared asked my permission if he could be my Voice. Confused, I said yes. Then he said I could take it back when I was ready. Again confused, I replied...Okay. Each day with him, I grew stronger & stronger. I looked forward to being in the Program. By the end,I knew what he meant, I had my VOICE back! Jared helped me find myself again! Jared is NOT your typical therapist. He does not sit there with a pen + paper asking the obvious questions! He is a real down to earth person who genuinely cares about you & wants you to succeed. I was so HAPPY to find out he ventured out on his own. He has been my LIFE COACH since leaving the program & now my 13 yr old gets the PRIVILEGE to benefit from his wisdom as well! I will follow him (Virtually) where ever he goes!
