Starting ADHD therapy

What is ADHD therapy?

At Thriveworks, we offer ADHD therapy, which is an effective treatment for managing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms such as inattention, inability to sit still, and lack of self-control. It can be used as an alternative to ADHD medication or used in tandem.

How does ADHD therapy work?

ADHD therapy works by using behavioral interventions — focusing on helping the individual develop organization skills, improve time management, and work on adaptive behaviors. A range of therapies are effective in helping people manage their ADHD and, sometimes, both individual and family therapy are important, particularly when the individual with ADHD symptoms is a child.

Symptoms of ADHD

Common symptoms of ADHD include:

  • Inattention and difficulty focusing on tasks
  • Impulsivity and acting without thinking
  • Hyperactivity or restlessness

Can ADHD develop as a coping mechanism?

ADHD is not a coping mechanism—but is instead affected by both genetics and environmental factors. The skilled therapists at Thriveworks in Boise, ID know how to treat the unique triggers and stressors that may influence the severity of someone's ADHD symptoms.

Can someone with ADHD lead a normal life?

Yes—many individuals with ADHD live successful, “normal” lives. Individuals with ADHD are not abnormal.

What kind of therapy is best for ADHD?

Common approaches to ADHD therapy include medication management, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, and parent training.

Is ADHD counseling conducted in person or online?

ADHD counseling is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual's preferences and their therapist's availability.

How long does ADHD counseling last?

The length of ADHD therapy can differ based on individual requirements and treatment objectives, spanning from a few weeks to several months or extending further, contingent on progress and personal needs.

Need more help deciding?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that causes concentration issues and increases hyperactivity in adults and children. It is one of the most common mental disorders in the world and often presents itself in individuals with impulsive behaviors.

While many people associate ADHD with children, the disorder can also be diagnosed later in life with adults. Though the symptoms may decrease over time, adults with ADHD should still seek assistance with their disorder, especially when symptoms interfere with their relationships, job, and sense of wellbeing.

Because many of the symptoms of the disorder overlap with other mental disorders, it’s important to receive an assessment before beginning treatment. Our providers will administer an ADHD test before treatment begins to ensure you’re receiving appropriate care.

We know that living with ADHD can make it difficult to focus and can put stress on your relationships with others. Because of fear and stigma surrounding the disorder, many adults fail to reach out for support and treatment. But it’s important to your emotional and mental wellbeing that you seek support if you’re suffering from symptoms of ADHD.

Our team members have worked with countless clients to help them manage their symptoms and achieve their goals. To schedule an assessment for you or your child, please call us at Thriveworks in Boise, ID. The sooner we get started, the sooner we can help you get back on track.

The Most Common Symptoms of ADHD

The symptoms of ADHD can vary from person to person and there are some differences between children with ADHD and adults with ADHD.

In adults, some of the most common symptoms of the disorder include:

  • Impulsiveness
  • Inattentiveness
  • Tiredness
  • Disorganization
  • Mood volatility
  • Forgetfulness
  • Inability to multitask
  • Poor stress management
  • Prioritization issues

In children, some of the most common symptoms may include:

  • Daydreaming
  • Disruptive behavior (such as interrupting)
  • Difficulty finishing tasks
  • Forgetfulness
  • Disorganization
  • Inability to multitask
  • Impulsiveness
  • Squirming

To be diagnosed with ADHD, you must experience a certain number of symptoms for six or more months. Additionally, many of these symptoms must occur before the age of twelve and must be present in different settings (such as school and home). To get started with a licensed professional, please schedule an appointment at Thriveworks in Boise, ID.

What Does It Mean to Treat ADHD?

People with ADHD can live the meaningful lives they want to live. Your therapist, counselor, or another mental health professional can give you tips and perform forms of therapy to help you pay attention, prioritize, and manage your moods more effectively.

Different treatments are available and will be used based on your specific symptoms and needs. Some of the treatment options available include:

  • Prescription medication to help regulate your mood
  • Behavior modification therapy to help you alter specific behaviors
  • Psychological counseling to help you improve your ability to solve problems and reduce friction with friends, family, and colleagues
  • Self-care practices such as meditation and mindfulness to help you manage the stress and anxiety that may come with ADHD
  • Setting up and maintaining a good exercise and sleep regimen to promote concentration and improve your mood

Since adult ADHD can differ from ADHD in children, different kinds of therapy may be performed. For young children, therapists may devise specific plans that address ADHD in the classroom and among peer groups. This may include helping your child develop techniques that assist with listening, organizing, and cooperating in a group setting. For teenagers, providers may focus more on anger management techniques, mindfulness practices, and behavioral therapy.

Whether you’re seeking services for yourself, your young child, or your teen, our professionals at Thriveworks in Boise, ID are committed to providing quality service.

I have been working with Jared for over a year now. When I first started with him, I was apprehensive about going to a new therapist. I was with one before and did not have much success. After my first session, I knew he was the right fit for me. My spouse had already been going for a while, so we were able to compare experiences. One thing we noticed was how Jared adapted his therapy style to each of us. We then started couples therapy with him. He has been a God-send for us in helping us work through our issues. We were able to uncover things about us that made us stronger as a team. I cannot recommend Jared enough. He is truly amazing and a master of his craft.

I met Jared @ an Out-Patient program back in 2012. I was going going threw so much at work & home and was in much need of guidance! While I HATED being there, I knew something needed to change. Somehow through out the years, I had lost my Voice. I no longer could balance what we call LIFE. Being a Wife, Step-mom, Business Woman, the Pilar to my immediate family & finally having my own child, took a toll on me...I could no longer function! While in this program, Jared asked my permission if he could be my Voice. Confused, I said yes. Then he said I could take it back when I was ready. Again confused, I replied...Okay. Each day with him, I grew stronger & stronger. I looked forward to being in the Program. By the end,I knew what he meant, I had my VOICE back! Jared helped me find myself again! Jared is NOT your typical therapist. He does not sit there with a pen + paper asking the obvious questions! He is a real down to earth person who genuinely cares about you & wants you to succeed. I was so HAPPY to find out he ventured out on his own. He has been my LIFE COACH since leaving the program & now my 13 yr old gets the PRIVILEGE to benefit from his wisdom as well! I will follow him (Virtually) where ever he goes!
