What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My approach to online therapy is to meet people where they are. I find that clients find the best benefit in this method because they can be more comfortable from the start. Working with a new therapist can be an intimidating process, and making the client as comfortable as possible is extremely important to me.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy - It focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes affect your feelings and actions.
  • Mindfulness therapy - Uses relaxation and awareness exercises to help focus on the present moment, aiming over time to experience day-to-day situations and stressors in nonjudgmental and non-reactionary ways.
  • Coping skills - Techniques taught to clients that help deter symptoms of anxiety or depression, can be either visual, such as thought processes, or tangible, such as writing exercises.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making progress in online therapy when they begin to reach goals in the treatment plan that is created at the beginning of the therapeutic process. There will be long-term and short-term goals agreed upon between the therapist and the client. These will be goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (e.g. learning coping skills to control symptoms of anxiety during high-stress situations within the next 4 weeks).

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by practicing the coping skills taught during the online discussion portion of therapy. They can also research topics related to their diagnosis or educate their family/friends about the therapeutic process.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online session, you can relax. If you have never participated in therapy before, you will not know what to expect, and that is okay. If you have participated in therapy in the past but have had a negative experience, you will probably be apprehensive, and that is okay too. Take a deep breath, relax, and let your therapist guide you through your sessions.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

Our Thriveworks therapists at Thriveworks in Woodridge, IL accept most major forms of insurance, which means that many of our clients only pay $0-$50 co-pay per session.
