"So...you want to know more about me: My name is Becky, I'm a therapist, I was born and raised in Southern Illinois in a small farm town (FYI, punishment for breaking the rules was having to milk cows on my Uncle's farm at 4:00 am), I lived 10 years in the Northern 'Burbs' of Chicago in my first real adult job, I absolutely adore my family, my husband and I have three cats, and most importantly, I would absolutely love the opportunity to work with you as your mental health therapist."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I became a counselor because I am in recovery for alcoholism. My sober date is 7/20/2008. I wanted to help other addicts learn how to live sober lives. This eventually merged into mental health counseling, and now I am able to work in both areas.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I enjoy working with children and adults in 20--100 age ranges the most.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Honestly, all of them. I am an introvert in my social life, and this is where I actually look forward to meeting people!
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Whatever feelings they have, they are not alone, and they are not wrong/stupid/crazy for having those feelings. I hear this so often, and it breaks my heart that people carry this with them day in and day out.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
The schedule options, benefits and pay at first attracted me, but now it's the people I have met. Everyone has been so kind, and even the emails sound happy!
What inspires you?
Seeing prior addiction clients turn their lives around and live sober.
Receiving cards from kiddos thanking me for being such a huge part of their lives.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
A welcoming smile, introduction, put the client at ease, answer any questions they may have, explain how the counseling process will work, make sure they are comfortable with the telehealth connection and the counseling process.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I would like them to feel comfortable with me, enough that they look forward to their next session. I would also like to complete an intake, along with making sure the client has all questions answered.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I'm going to meet them where they're at. If they're grieving the loss of a loved one, I will grieve with them. If they are mad at their spouse, I will validate their feelings. They will never be judged by me.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Spend as much time as I can with my family.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My faith in God. I know it's not the most PC thing to have right now, but it's the most important thing in my life. I will not push it onto anyone, nor do I bring it up in sessions, but it definitely defines me.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
During my first counseling job there were 5 women, with children, living in long-term apartments at the treatment facility where I worked. All had DCFS involvement, and none of them had custody of their children. One by one, 4 of the women got jobs, finished school got full custody of their children, got their driver's licenses back, finished treatment, found their own homes, and 2 got married. The women are still close friends to this day, and they spend time together as a group very often. Their kids play together, and they are all doing so well. It's so humbling to know that I helped them start their road to recovery.
