What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in family therapy is communication. I find the best benefit in educating family members about talking, active listening, and body language. This process would include helping them see whether some of their views are potentially incorrect.

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

I teach the following tools in family therapy: how to use active listening and looking beyond one's viewpoint.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy when they speak of improved communication and offer their feelings of surprise about seeing another’s viewpoint.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in family therapy by writing about issues that persist. They can also use the general 5 Love Languages theme.

What should someone do to prepare for starting family therapy?

To prepare for their first family therapy session, an individual can make a few notes about what will improve the situation. Also, they can write personality traits that the individual feels are strengths.

Starting Family therapy in Waco

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Waco, TX usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Waco, TX offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Family therapy is something that helps you and your loved ones at any stage in your relationship. Family therapists at Thriveworks in Waco, TX can help you if you’re struggling with:

  • Persistent anxiety over financial issues or relationship difficulties
  • Undiagnosed mental health conditions or disorders
  • Alcohol or drug addiction
  • Feelings of resentment or hostility between relatives
  • Unruly behavioral issues in children or teens

Remember that these are only a few of the many ways that our home and family lives can become unpleasant and hostile. Even if the causes of your family’s problems aren’t listed, you can still talk with one of our professional counselors or therapists. Our team in Waco, TX can address your unique concerns, so don’t hesitate to contact us for assistance.

How Can Family Counseling Improve Our Situation?

Our family therapists can help families by:

  • Providing assistance as you engage in balanced dialogue and candid discussion
  • Offering encouragement and mediating conversations between relatives, enabling you to empathize and compromise with one another respectfully
  • Creating and promoting newfound respect for personal boundaries and healthy communication
  • Working through mental health conditions with family members to find new emotional balance and well-being

When you and your relatives open up to one of our mental health professionals, you’ll be giving your family counselor an in-depth look at the dynamics and situations that are causing issues in your home life. With that valuable feedback, a family therapist can help you all to start implementing coping methods and communication strategies that defuse tense situations and remind you how to compromise, even when you’re frustrated or angry.

I love my therapist. I was really skeptical being 65 but she is younger, but asked the right questions for me to get through those feelings and give me feedback that I can do in the next week so that when we have our meetings, we have something more to talk about a jump off place that we can visit and see if I have met any of that
