About
I have a firm belief that none of us are perfect and as such we should continually strive to learn from our experiences and be better today than we were yesterday.
I have been in the helping profession for over 25 years and have worked in many different roles during that time. I have worked with children to older adults and all ages in between. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), and have worked with those with anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, as well as Bipolar disorder. I prefer to use a client centered approach, in which we would work collaboratively to determine the best course to take in addressing your needs and concerns and helping to decrease problem symptoms.
I tend to lean towards the use of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in recognizing that the mind has a great effect on one's ability to change behaviors and habits. I also utilize Motivational Interviewing (MI) in an effort to direct and inspire you to realize and bring about change in your own life.
I would be honored to help you work through what you've been carrying and find greater clarity. I bring care and understanding to everyone I work with — and I want you to know that change is possible, including changes you may not have realized you needed yet. Take the next step and schedule a session today to start taking an active role in your healing.

Mary Lou Macarius is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who specializes in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral issues, grief, parenting issues, school issues, stress, women's issues, and child therapy. She has more than 26 years of experience, working at institutions such as the Pacific Lutheran University Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic and Good Samaritan Behavioral Health Care Center, as well as in public schools serving students K-12th grade, working independently in Comfort Counseling. She also has experience serving individuals from six years old to 65 years old from her time at the Renton Counseling Center. She is a clinical member of The American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.
Mary Lou received a Bachelor of Social Work from Eastern Washington University and a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pacific Lutheran University. She utilizes multiple treatment approaches including, but not limited to, solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and structural family therapy. Mary Lou's dominant practicing theories are those of structural family therapy, which focuses on the ways in which families function and the changes that need to be made in the family structure to help them function more effectively, and solution-focused theory, which looks at the solutions that the client brings to therapy for coping with problems and builds on the client’s successes. She also likes to use some narrative therapy, which is focused on changing the way that you look at your life or problems.
Mary Lou is a trauma survivor and comes from an immigrant family, both of which influence the work that she does on a day-to-day basis. This, along with her clinical experience, allows her to support and understand her clients in unique ways.

I understand what it’s like to “put on a brave face” and be strong and to neglect emotional health, but also understand that true strength comes from being vulnerable.

Because of my own personal experience with tragic loss and early childhood trauma, I have confidence in my ability to create a safe space that people can enter and feel supported while sharing their vulnerability.
I am a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) with 7 years of experience supporting teens, adults, parents, and families. I specialize in helping clients navigate academic stress, peer pressure, anxiety, self-harm, and suicidal ideation. I take a holistic approach to care, recognizing the connection between the mind and body and how multiple factors influence a person’s overall well-being.
I earned my master’s in psychology from Seattle University. My clinical approach integrates cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based practices, and person-centered therapy, with influences from existential-phenomenological theory. I tailor treatment to each client’s lived experience and unique needs.
I believe therapy is a collaborative, two-way relationship built on trust and accountability. I provide a nonjudgmental, open space where you can feel heard and supported. If you’re ready to create meaningful change, I invite you to begin this journey with me—we’ll navigate it together.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in Seattle, WA have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.
Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Seattle, WA will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.
If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.
There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.
Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.
