I truly appreciate how down to earth my provider, Kaamilya Wedwick, is. She gives very insightful feedback and consistently provides tools that have helped me tremendously both as a parent along with being a young adult navigating various aspects of familial and romantic relationships, work life, and self esteem. I feel heard/seen during our sessions and each time I leave feeling more confident in my choices and interactions. I'm very grateful for this experience.

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

When I was an undergraduate at the University of Missouri, I started taking psychology and sociology courses and found that I really enjoyed them. During that time I joined the military because I wanted to serve my community and make a difference, even if it was just a small difference. While in the military, I got to meet a lot of different people and hear a lot of different stories and started seeing the injustices and lack of mental health services within the military as well as in the civilian world. I then decided to become a social worker to do my part in serving people who are in underserved communities and provide mental health services to those communities.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

Honestly, I am excited to work with anyone who is ready to do the hard work in therapy!

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish that everyone knew that vulnerability is actually a strength and when you miss out on being vulnerable with another person, you are missing out on a moment for connection.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I choose Thriveworks because it provides accessible therapy to anyone that may be seeking help, whether that is tele-health sessions or in person sessions.

What inspires you?

When I was younger Oprah always talked about those "A-Ha" moments that I never really understood until I became a therapist. Seeing people have those "A-Ha" moments and then applying the skills learned in therapy is truly inspiring.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

At the first session I will complete a full intake to get to know the client and what they want to work on in therapy. Often, I will ask therapy clients what their expectations are for therapy, what their expectations are for their therapist, and expectations they have for themselves.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

At the first session, I want to begin the rapport building process and have clients feel welcome to share their therapy goals.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

Clients should know that they should feel safe to share and be vulnerable in our sessions.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I love spending time with my husband and our son or hanging out with friends.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

Being a mother has truly challenged me and who I am as a person. It has required me to face some ugly truths, so I can be the best mother I can be. It has been an inspiration watching my son grow into his own personality and see and do things for the very first time.
