Rachel Herman is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor with 8 years of experience. She has worked with children, adults, and adolescents in various settings including residential, foster care, and private practice. Rachel has experience and interest in working with children, teens, and adults struggling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, PTSD, relationships, communication, anger management, and social skills.
Rachel received her Master’s in Counseling from The Family Institute at Northwestern University. Rachel is trained in psychodynamic theory and incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, mindfulness, internal family systems, and motivational interviewing.
Rachel regards therapy as a partnership between client and therapist and strives to empower clients toward accomplishing their goals. Mary Lou Macarius is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who specializes in treating anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral issues, grief, parenting issues, school issues, stress, women's issues, and child therapy. She has more than 20 years of experience, working at institutions such as the Pacific Lutheran University Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic and Good Samaritan Behavioral Health Care Center, as well as in public schools serving students K-12th grade, working independently in Comfort Counseling. Mary Lou's dominant practicing theories are those of structural family therapy, which focuses on the ways in which families function and the changes that need to be made in the family structure to help them function more effectively, and solution-focused theory, which looks at the solutions that the client brings to therapy for coping with problems and builds on the client’s successes. She also likes to use some narrative therapy, which is focused on changing the way that you look at your life or problems.

My go-to approach for helping people in teen counseling is solution-focused therapy. I prefer solution-focused therapy because it focuses on expanding solution possibilities.
I teach the following tools in teen counseling: I feel statements/communication, strategies for dealing with conflict, and ways to calm down/cope with anxiety-including breathing exercises, thought stopping, etc.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in teen counseling when they report being able to talk more openly with family and friends, experience less conflict with peers or family members, make friends with people who are a positive influence, etc.
Clients can supplement their time in teen counseling by practicing skills such as breathing exercises, thought stopping, or practicing using I feel statements. Clients may also be emailed handouts to use to practice skills.
To prepare for their first teen counseling session, a teen can make a list of items that they want to talk about or that are bothering them to bring to the first session.
Teen counseling helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst teens include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problematic relationships with food.
Teen counseling works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the teen’s unique needs — based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. Signs that teens might need Teen counseling can be very subjective, as they are experiencing many changes and can have intense reactions to them.
