What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is narrative therapy and CBT. I find this to be the best approach because often, individuals who have suffered traumatic events feel powerless, and narrative therapy can help with taking back power and providing a sense of security while processing the event(s).

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach the following tools in PTSD/trauma therapy:

  • Narrative therapy
  • Grounding exercises
  • Breathing techniques
  • Mindfulness
  • Distress tolerance
  • “Burn letters”
  • Building self-confidence
  • Unconditional positive support and a safe place

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when they feel more comfortable talking about and processing their feelings regarding the event(s), knowing that they cannot change the past but look forward to the future.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy by practicing mindfulness and meditation, attending support groups, and possibly adding EMDR therapy if necessary.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

Preparing for the first PTSD/trauma therapy session is never easy. Clients just need to remember that they have taken the courageous first step, which is also the first step towards healing.

Michael was super in working with my wife, me and sometimes our son. He is a good listener, offers suggestions but in the end, we had to make our own decisions. It was good to bounce ideas off him and his manner makes one feel comforted after discussing issues with him. He also responded to my emails and emergency phone calls.
