My go-to approach for helping people in dialectical behavior therapy is to combine validation of emotions with skills training. This is the core mission of DBT. We allow emotions to exist as they come, and we also become empowered to choose coping skills.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

I teach and walk through the four modules of DBT:

  • Mindfulness Skills
  • Emotion Regulation Skills
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills
  • Distress Tolerance Skills
Each client will move through the modules at their own pace, and I will allow for shifts in the depth and breadth appropriate for each client.

I know a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy when they report a win in choosing a skill to manage an intense emotion, outside of therapy. This shows the beginning of an ability to self-soothe, which is often a struggle zone for clients.
