Get to know Heather

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

Even as a child I had a passion for psychology and how our perception and experience of life effects our overall health. I became a counselor to quinch my thirst for knowledge of human psychology and in turn help others process their life experiences, understand more about themselves, and thrive in their life.

What types of clients do you work with best?

Clients who are wanting to learn how to accept themselves and are aware that the healing process can hurt before it feels better. They are open to traditional and alternative healing techniques to allow for an authentic and holistic healing experience met for each client's individual needs.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I'm excited to work with clients that acknowledge their inner-child and that play exists no matter what the age they are or cards life hand dealt them. Clients I am most excited to work might identify with the gorgeous Maya Angelou quote, "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style."

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

That each living being; from human, animal, or plant; whether domesticated or feral, are truly trying the best they can with all the resources, awareness, education, and energy they have at any given moment. The breathe each living being has inside of us is the evidence of our inherent worth and value. It is from that evidence that we can know we are capable and worthy of thriving in each of our lives. Lastly, I wish all clients knew that the good they see in the world and others also exists inside of them; leading to more reason to give love and admiration in the relationship with self.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I am excited to practice at Thriveworks due to their passion for people and the authentic approach they allow for all clients. As well as the ease of access to mental health resources for clients and the support they give their practitioners so that we can in turn provide better care for clients.

What inspires you?

I'm inspired by people, nature, animals, different mediums of art, philosophy, and listening to people (including those who are not clients) and how life has treated them and their approach and/or perspective to their individual life experiences. I'm also constantly inspired by Carl Jung and studies of the consciousness through dreams, symbols, and archetypes.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

During our first session you can expect a casual, relaxed therapist who is passionate and excited about the industry I work in. You can expect to be an interactive part of the treatment plan process.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I want to know your goals for therapy, what's been working for you in coping with life issues, what hasn't been working for you, if you have a religious or spiritual belief system, what you like to do for fun, and what you enjoy doing in your spare time. All this would work as the foundation for your unique individualized treatment plan, barring in mind that treatment plans can often adapt as sessions continue.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

I understand the strength it takes to walk into your first therapy session. The fear of opening old wounds and healing is real. Whether a physical wound or emotional and mental wound; healing can feel worse before it feels better. I'm here to be with you through that non-linear healing journey.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I enjoy crocheting, painting, sewing, reading, and all around anything arts and crafts. I love being outside when the Texas heat isn't too bad. During my time off work, I find fulfillment baking and cooking for my family, friends, and pets. However I also enjoy time alone to craft or read with my doggo and cat by my side.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

My heart defines me. Inside of my heart contains a depth and wealth of empathy, respect, ability to understand, and love for all things in life. It's what keeps me hungry for education and my passion for the arts alive. My heart is where I hold my capability to find understanding, explore the human psyche, my loyalty to my relationships, and my strident desire to be the best clinician I can be for my clients.
